Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1774. Later edition. This book, first published in 1686, was an influential maritime guide for 18th-century sailors. It provides information on practical geometry, trigonometry, mathematics, navigation techniques such as methods for plane, Mercator and great circle sailing, celestial navigation, sea-reckoning, and much more. The author, James Atkinson, was a navigation instructor and mathematician. The book contains 10 folding charts, all in very good condition, including one (plate 10 entitled "A Rectifier") that is a moveable chart and (amazingly) is intact and in good working condition. Many tables at rear, including logarithms, tangents and secants. Hardcover, full leather, re-backed at some point keeping original front and back covers, with new spine. Four raised bands, gilt rules and gilt titles in a black band on the spine. Very good condition, firmly bound, small label inside front cover from a bookstore that once owned it.
