Deze 'brieven' zijn gedateerd tussen juli en october 1817 toen…de schrijver door Nederland reisde, waar hij alle belangrijke steden en talloze kleinere plaatsen in Holland, Utrecht en Gelderland bezocht. Zij geven gedetailleerde informatie over vroegere en tegenwoordige inwoners, regering, handel en nijverheid, godsdienst, dagelijks leven, bezienswaardigheden, middelen van transport, liefdadigheid, cultureel leven, enz. Het derde deel geeft een algemene geschiedenis van Nederland en een beschrijving van zijn tegenwoordige toestand. Strick, geboren in Utrecht uit een oud adellijk geslacht, was in 1796 lid van de Nationale Vergadering en daarna gezant van de Bataafse Republiek in Wurttemberg, waar hij echter in ongenade viel wegens zijn vrijzinnige politieke en godsdienstige denkbeelden. Na zijn terugroeping leefde hij tot 1807 als ambteloos burger op zijn landgoed Linschoten, waarna hij naar Duitsland verhuisde waar hij tot zijn dood in verschillende steden leefde. Strick stond zeer critisch ten opzichte van zijn vaderland en, na 1813, tegen de monarchale regering van Willem I. Een Nederlandse vertaling werd tegengehouden tot 1855-56, toen een vertaling (van alleen de eerste 2 delen) verscheen. *NNBW V,c.834.

Der wahre Verfassser, Baron Strick van Linschoten (1769-1819) aus Utrecht, wurde nach dem Studium in Göttingen 1796 als Vertreter der Batavischen Republik an den württ. Hof entsandt, fiel aber wegen seine…r freisinnigen Ansichten in Stuttgart bald in Ungnade. 1801 wurde er abberufen. Kurz vor der Einnahme der Niederlande durch die Truppen Napoleons ging er nach Mannheim. Nach der Befreiung kehrte er kurz in die Heimat zurück, und in dieser Zeit entstanden seine kritischen "Vertrauten Briefe". Sie "waren nicht für das große Publikum bestimmt, wie bereits aus dem Titel erhellt, und noch deutlicher deren Inhalt zeigt, welcher manches bis jetzt Unbekannte aufdeckt und zum öffentlichen Geheimnisse macht." (Vorerinnerung) Baron Strick starb in Bologna. Seine Tochter Elisabeth heiratete 1826 den preuß. Staatsmann Alexander Heinrich Frhr. von Arnim-Suckow. ?
