Electricity flows through the brush to the metal: by changing the voltage, he manipulates the layers of oxidation and, in turn, the colors.Intermittently, he etches grooves and scratches into the surface with a grinder or wire brush. But it's.the photography, that gives his work its shadows, turbulence, and dreamlike mystery. Shipped with care. --- A folio-format monograph gathering the Pacific Light series by Jay Dunitz, reproduced in fifty-two colour photogra…phic plates. The works photographed are Cibachrome images of Dunitz's mixed-media pieces, in which sheets of reactive metal are worked with a brush wired to a power supply and an electrolyte solution; variations in voltage shift the layers of oxidation and their colour, while a grinder or wire brush is used to etch grooves into the surface. The final image is achieved through the photography itself, with as many as thirty lights used to illuminate a single piece. The volume carries an introduction by Peter Clothier and an afterword by Ellen Handy, edited by Peter Levitt and designed by Sheila Levrant de Bretteville. Supplementary matter includes artist's notes, a list of plates, and a brief biography and bibliography. Issued in an edition limited to five thousand copies. Signed by Author.
