Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - An electrical engineer, university teacher and wide-ranging writer, Fleeming Jenkin (1833-85) filed thirty-five British patents in the course of his career. Edited by Sidney Colvin (1845-1927) and J. A. Ewing (1855-1935) and first published in 1887, this two-volume work brings together a selection of Jenkin's varied and engaging papers. The collection ranges from notes on his voyages as a marine telegraph engineer, to a critical review of Darwin's On the Origin of Species, essays on literature, and thoughts on technical education. A memoir written by Robert Louis Stevenson, his former student, provides biographical context and attests to Jenkin's many interests and talents across the arts and sciences. Volume 1 begins with Stevenson's memoir, incorporating Jenkin's records of his voyages. This is followed by writings on literature and drama. Three pieces on scientific subjects, including the review of Darwin, conclude the volume.

Robert Louis Stevenson (of all people) wrote a lengthy memoir on Jenkin 15 years after the man's death (published 1901), in which he seems to sum up Jenkin's thinking as a sort of "rainbow vision", which is very interesting given Jenkin's severe-ish behavior. (Wm Thomson also gives an appraisal of Jenkin in an appendix to that work.) [++] "Charles Augustin de Coulomb had only carried out sliding (dynamic) friction experiments in which the two surfaces were moving across each other at relatively high velocities, and so did not test his law of friction at low velocities. English engineers Fleeming Jenkin (1833-1885) and Alfred Ewing (1855-1935) filled the gap by conducting experiments at low velocities and found that the coefficient of friction increases to approach that of static friction as relative velocity approaches zero, indicating that Coulomb s law should be restated to include a smooth rather than abrupt transition from static friction to dynamic friction. All offered in their original weekly formats and each with their original wrappers and advertisements (making them fairly scarce), and removed from a larger bound volume. Very Good Condition. 3 parts:__+__ Also: preceding the first article in July 25 is "A Method of recording Articulate Vibrations by Means of Photography", by E.W. Blake, which evidently appeared in the American Journal of Science, July 1878. The articles in general are beautifully illustrated.
