Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This fascinating book provides a rare glimpse into the realities of life in the opulent city of St. Petersburg around 1850. It is a city full of surprises, where the magnificence of the Winter Palace and the grandeur of the Neva River contrast sharply with the grim realities of serfdom and the harshness of the Russian winter. The author, a German stage actor, gives an unbiased, firsthand account of Russian society, with insights into the life of the imperial court, the plight of the serfs, and the role of the police. He also explores the contradictions of a society in transition, balancing his praise for the beauty of St. Petersburg with a condemnation of the autocratic rule of Nicholas I. Through the author's keen observations, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and contradictions of 19th-century Russia.
