This third volume describes the locomotives and freight…cars built by the Portland Company; the history of the shops of the Franklin & Megantic, Phillips & Rangeley, Sandy River and Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes railroads; the excursion cars built by the Phillips & Rangeley; and the excursion cars, railcars and railbuses, and cabooses built by the Sandy River and SR&RL. This and subsequent volumes are the result of nearly 15 years of research primarily in sources not used by previous authors. The author has attempted to accurately and fairly present this information. Many of the photographs shown are published for the first time and will be of interest to both the historian and model railroader. The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad and Predecessors, Volume 3 will be followed by other volumes which will include equipment rosters, equipment drawings, and a presentation of the railroad lines including the buildings, structures and related industries.
