Hardcover. Etat : Good. A nice-looking lot of different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam, New York and London: T.N. Foulis, 1920, a stated reprint of the Second Edition of Macmillan & Co. fro 1859, and illustrated with 15 colored plates by the incomparable artist Frank Brangwyn, tipped-in, onto stiff card stock, quite fine, including at frontis. Bound in a quarto hardcover format, brown cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt-stamped lettering to spine, brown-stamped designs to front cover. Light scuffing to edges, tips, but protected further by stiff Mylar jacket. Unpaginated, but roughly 80 pp. 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, London and Glasgow: Collins, 1952. Illustrated by the incomparable artist Robert Stewart Sherriffs in full, bright color plates including at frontis. Flexible Hardcover format, bound in black pebbly cloth, edges and tips scuffed, but gilt edges all round and silk linen ribbon bookmark still affixed firmly. Cracking to front pastedown, erased name inside rear flap, and quite an involved edition. Long introduction by Lawrence Housman, biography of the translator, Edward FitzGerald by G.F. Maine, FitzGerald's biography of Omar Khayyam, then followed by First, Second and Fifth Editions of the Rubaiyat, followed by sections on variations between the editions, comparable table of quatrains, notes to the second edition, glossary and an index to the first lines of the quatrains. 224 pp.; 3) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, rendered into English Verse by Edward Sullivan, New York: Three Sirens Press, a reprint of an Illustrated Editions edition, based on the First and fifth editions, and with a list at book's end of other editions on which this is based. Blue cloth over boards, pebbly black cloth-backed. Really lovely black-and-white drawings by Edmund J. Sullivan including at frontis. 193 [1] pp. 4) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the metrical translations of Edward FitzGerald and E.H. Whinfield and the prose version of Justin H. McCarthy, Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1900. Bound in blue cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering and designs to spine, front cover. Scuffing to spine head and foot, edges, tips, faint remains of a gift inscription at first free endpaper, else a little, attractive tank. Introduction by Jessie B. Rittenhouse, followed by plentiful essays including by Mathilde Blind, Andrew Lang and others. 244 pp. including notes and bibliography; 5) The Rubaiyat of a Golfer, by J.A. Hammerton, published in London by Country Life in a First Edition edition, a skinny, short, 12mo hardcover, bound in gray cloth over boards, red lettering to front cover. Previous owner's ink-stamp along top edge, light rubbing to, sunning of front cover, fanciful, cartoonish illustrtions by D.L. Ghilchik. Unpaginated, but roughly 30 pp.; 6) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1898. Based on the texts of the Fourth Edition followed by that of the First Edition, with notes. Biographical Preface by Talcott Williams. Blue cloth over boards, gilt lettering and design to front cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Extensive penned gift inscription at first free endpaper. Short, skinny, mass market paperback-sized, Fine illustration at frontis, tissue-guarded, but tissue torn. 75 pp. including notes by the editor.; 7) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, New York: Barse & Hopkins, 1898, with introductory essays by Andrew Lang and Edward S. Holden. Bound in red cloth over boards, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, rubbed, black-stamped design to front cover. Black-and-white frontis portrait of FitzGerald. Lovely black-and-white plates by Gilbert James. 136 pp.; 8) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the Salaman and Absal of Jami, published in New York by Thomas Crowell, n.d., but perhaps very early 1900s. An uncommonly pretty little exemplar covered in a heavily textured light brown, stippled cloth over boards, gilt lettering over light gray leather label at front cover, being fine floral designs, a stout, short octavo volume, top edges gilt, almost breastpocket-sized. Epilogue by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, note by the editor W. Aldis Wright. 288 pp. and with a complicated Table of Contents including notes, bibliography and index and comparisons between stanzas and translations, notes by former editors, comparisons of stanzas, variations between editions, and the like.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
