Was there one that really changed the way you think about things, whether you first read it in high school English, on a blanket at the beach, or under the covers with a flashlight? A good book can truly change our lives, altering the way we look at the world and challenging us to experience the unknown. Sometimes it is love at first sentence, and sometimes there is a single character so real that he or she stays with us long after we've turned the last page. In The Book That Changed My Life, our most admired writers and public intellectuals discuss the books that matter most to them. For Nelson DeMille it was Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, which upset his well-ordered world as a college student in the 1950s and shaped his political views. For Doris Kearns Goodwin it was Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August, which inspired her to enter the field of history-writing, traditionally reserved for men. For Jacques Pepin it was The Myth of Sisphus, which taught him the importance of personal responsibility, dignity, and goodness in the midst of existentialist France. Their words are a testament to the life-altering importance of literature and their reading choices inspire us to return to old favorites and seek out new treasures. Roxanne J. Coady, owner of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, Connecticut, conceived this collection as a celebration of her bookstore where, at one time or another, all of the contributors have read their work." - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
