Soft Cover. Etat : As New. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Second Printing. Publisher's glossy wraps. Illustrated with numerous B&W drawings and maps by Robert M. Mengel. Kansas and western Missouri are astonishingly rich in birdlife. Located in the very center of the North American continent, the area is home to most of the eastern bird fauna and many of the western species, and even hosts occasional visitors from the far north. Over 400 species More.of birds have been recorded in Kansas alone, an abundance that places it among the top five birding states in the country. .ShrinkBird Finding in Kansas and Western Missouri is a guide to this rich mosaic of birdlife. Written for both resident and visiting birders, the book begins with an introduction to the region's avian diversity and to its eleven major biotic communities. Illustrated with 17 line drawings by renowned artist and ornithologist Robert Mengel, A Guide to Bird Finding also features 26 detailed maps, a checklist of birds of the region, and an annotated list of Specialty Species. The book's main focus, though is on birding tours--75 of them. Meticulously described and thoroughly road-tested, these tours lead down paved highways, dirt roads, and paths, past old cemeteries, around lakes, along creeks, into cities, and out onto the prairie, winding through the birding hotspots of Kansas and western Missouri. With this new guide in hand, birders can tailor their expeditions to focus on the big picture, taking advantage of all the birding possibilities a particular location has to offer, or the small picture, searching out one or two especially challenging species. Zimmerman and Patti have provided information on road conditions and tour routes, and have also zeroed in on a few birding surprises--like Bobolinks next to saline marshes in central Kansas.Among the many birding possibilities the book suggests are: a trip to the tallgrass prairie of the Flint Hills where Greater Prairie-chickens and Henslow's Sparrows can be seen; a tour of the Cimarron National Grassland, the best place in the U.S, to see Lesser Prairie-chickens; a tour of Missouri's Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, the spectacular staging area for over 500,000 geese and other waterfowl; and a trip to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms, internationally significant wetlands that are an essential migration stopover for hundreds of species , particularly waterfowl and shorebirds, and even Whooping Cranes. The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, unread, tight, square and clean. AS NEW. Trade Paperback. Drawings. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 244 pp. Illustrated by Robert M. Mengel (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. What makes a great operational commander, and can those qualities be isolated, named, and taught? In February 1998 a United States naval officer set out to answer that question by studying an unlikely subject for a sailor: the German general who, more than any other man, conceived and built the armored striking force that overran Poland in 1939 and France in 1940. An Analysis of the Operational Leadership of General Heinz Guderian is a paper submitted by Lieutenant Commander John W. Mengel of the U.S. Navy to the Faculty of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in partial satisfaction of the requirements of the Department of Joint Military Operations, under U.S. Army faculty advisor Colonel William P. Goodwin. Its thesis is that successful operational commanders, across services and eras, share an identifiable set of qualities, which the author groups under three headings: operational thinking, execution of the operational plan, and the intangible character traits of the commander. Guderian is presented not as a German hero but as a case study through which those universal qualities can be examined, with the theoretical framework drawn from the operational-art definitions of Naval War College professor Milan Vego. The paper situates Guderian within the discipline of operational art, the vital link between national and theater strategy on one hand and tactical combat on the other, deploying a vocabulary any modern staff officer would recognize: operational objectives, centers of gravity, critical vulnerabilities, culminating points, decisive points, and lines of operation. It then traces Guderian's formation in the Prussian tradition, the Karlsruhe cadet school and the Gross-Lichterfelde academy, a system that bred flexibility of thought and skepticism toward orthodoxy. His fluency in English and French let him read Fuller, Liddell Hart, Martel, and de Gaulle; his First World War service as a cavalry signals officer taught him the value of mobility and of radio reaching down to the lowest tactical level; and his interwar assignment to motor transport, which he had tried to avoid, made him the German army's de facto expert on armored forces before he ever set foot in a tank. The heart of the study is two campaigns. In Poland, Guderian's XIX Corps drove across the Corridor to the Vistula, and the synergism of surprise, speed, and concentration he called the essence of blitzkrieg produced a swift collapse. In France, he executed the bold "Sickle Cut" plan of Erich von Manstein, whom he called "our finest operational brain," driving three Panzer divisions through the supposedly impassable Ardennes and across the Meuse at Sedan, then racing for the coast despite repeated halt orders from his own high command, his willingness to lead from the front and to contradict superiors, Hitler included, marking the difference between operational and strategic success. This Nimble Books edition reproduces the paper faithfully and adds a full editorial apparatus prepared for this volume: a new Historical Context essay on why a modern war college studies a tank general; two complementary abstracts, an accessible plain-language summary and an advanced analytical summary tracing the Vego-framed leadership triad through Guderian's career; a Glossary of operational-art and armored-warfare terms; Indexes of persons, places, and concepts; and an original computational "RKHS" knowledge-graph analysis situating the work among related studies of leadership, blitzkrieg, and operational art. The title page notes that this edition is enhanced with text analytics by PageKicker. For military professionals, war-college and ROTC students, historians of the Second World War, librarians, and readers of leadership studies, it offers a compact, doctrine-anchored portrait of a commander whose example is still taught as a template for sou Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…
