Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed and fascinating examination of the turbulent relationship between England and Scotland during a pivotal period in both nationsââ ⢠histories. Spanning nearly a century from the early 16th century to the death of Queen Elizabeth, the book delves into a complex web of political intrigue, religious conflict, and violent upheaval. It meticulously chronicles the reigns of Scottish monarchs like James IV, James V, and Mary, Queen of Scots, alongside the English monarchs who shaped their destinies. The book goes beyond mere political accounts, offering a window into the daily lives of ordinary people caught in the crossfire. Through letters, proclamations, and other official documents, the author brings to life the brutal realities of life on the borderlands, where lawlessness was rampant and the threat of war ever present. The book explores the rise of the Reformation in both countries, highlighting the powerful influence of figures like John Knox and the impact of the religious schism on the political landscape. The book offers rich insights into the motivations of key players, from the machinations of Queen Elizabeth to the intricacies of Mary, Queen of Scotsââ ⢠captivity in England. It examines the various attempts at peace between the two nations, the often-failed efforts to unite them through marriage, and the tragic events that ultimately led to the union of the crowns under James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England. Through its intimate portrayal of this pivotal period, the book reveals the complex dynamics of power, faith, and national identity that shaped the destiny of these two nations. Mr. Bedford' that Thorpe is 'very conversant with Archaeological matters', and asks whether he has 'met with a Seal fo Abp. Cranmer'. Gorham is 'getting drawings of four of his Seals, for probable publication'. Bedford 'thinks there is a drawing of one among the Ashmole MSS.' but Gorham does not remember seeing one there. He hopes to 'have 2 or 3 hours in Oxford on Monday, & will look for it'. As he will be 'very much hurried' he asks Thorpe to 'look at the Ashmole Catalogue - & to inform me by a note at the Mitre Tavern of the result. I hope to reach Oxford at 12.55 on Monday.' For more information on Gorham and Thorpe, see their entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Gorham was subject of a bitter controversy with Henry Phillpotts, Bishop of Exeter, which resulted in what the ODNB calls 'one of the most celebrated legal actions of the century'.…
