Spine and inner edges of boards sunned and map showing sellotape burns neatly rebacked; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by folding map, frontispiece, photographic plate and by wood engravings in text. Decorated by initials and endpiece vignettes St John Colbran (1842-1922) took over the publishing business of his father, John, in 1860 but did not produce the first edition of his own guide until 1880. The title has an extensive historical section occupying the first 151 pages of the text. The Colbran company, which had been publishing guidebooks since 1839, was purchased by Goulden and Nye in 1887, although this Second Edition still remained in print in 1893. In original buff printed stiff card boards, with variant title and edition statement on front and summary of contents on rear boards. Deckled edges. Recent paper spine, extremities worn and occasional foxing; otherwise a good copy. Illustrated by hand coloured folding map frontispiece, engraved Circulating Library advertisement (at end) and 7 Bewick-style vignettes in text, including title page. Decorated by endpiece vignette. Similar to Goulden 35-36 but the preface (Address) is dated 1820, the Advertisement, May 1821 and there is a list of lodging houses at the end. As Goulden observes, this Second Edition, originally published in 1818, appeared in 'a rash of reissues marked variously by cancel title pages, differently dated prefaces or cancel covers.' The second edition was a notably reduced version of the previous 1817 edition that John Clifford (1787-1843) had taken over from his uncle, Jasper Sprange. Illustrated with 2 folding maps and fourteen plates, including seven engravings (2 folding) and seven woodcuts. plus title page vignette and dedication. A slip, Tunbridge Wells fares, bound in after p.165. Original yellow printed paper wrappers, sometime respined in yellow card. Wrappers and some lower page corners a little grubby and worn, but preserving the original apperance. One folding plate repaired. A plan of Tunbridge Wells, serving as a frontispiece has the southern Parish and County boundaries hand-coloured in outline. A late edition of Clifford's guide with the (undated) title page little changed from the early years of the century. It is similar to Goulden 61 but has additional plates and is in paper covers. The Address to the reader is dated January, 1840. The front cover contains the same date and the edition statement with an altered imprint, Sold also by R.Nash and J.Elliott (compare Goulden 62) All these ephemeral guides have become very difficult to find complete. It is closest to Goulden 59, but has five plates rather than six and a different pagination of the advertisement sections after the main text. The preface (Address) is dated June, 1837. Like the preceding Fifth and Sixth Editions, John Clifford (1787-1843) has returned to using the identical title page of his 1817 edition with the 1837 date re-engraved. The Bewick-style wood engravings have been dropped from this state but reappear in the 1840 issue of this edition. Extremities a little worn and occasional foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of William John Mercer. Illustrated by frontispiece and by wood engravings in text. This Second Edition of Colbran's New Guide For Tunbridge Wells has the date 1844 on the title page and an undated Advertisement and Preface, but refers to 'this present summer, 1846' on page one of Addenda. Essentially a reissue of the 1843 Second Edition, it has no map, only one plate (instead of fourteen) and a five page Addenda and therefore corresponds most closely to Goulden 80; with the exception that it has a brown cover and the advertisement for the Hydropathic Establishment on page 27 of the initial advertisement section is pasted over by a cancel advertisement for the same establishment as in Goulden 82 and 83 (which, however have the map and fourteen or fifteen plates). According to Goulden, too many copies were normally printed of these guides, leading to a complex sequence of cancels and reissues of the preliminaries of all editions from 1839-40 onward (see his paragraph, p. 94-95 for the additional complications of the 1844-46 reissues). A notable addition to the Second Edition is the addendum on the South Eastern Railway, whose main line to Folkestone and Dover was completed, 1843-44, while this 1846 reissue has an Addenda describing the opening of the Tunbridge Wells branch railway. John Colbran (1809-84) was a former apprentice of John Clifford, the other important publisher of Tunbridge Wells guidebooks in the first half of the nineteenth century. Colbran employed James Phippen (1795?-1862), who had written guides for several other Kent towns, to edit his guidebook. The former owner of this copy was William John Mercer (d.1926), a Margate solicitor whose collection of books and papers is now in Canterbury Cathedral Library.
