La correspondance inédite nous mo…ntre Marie Philipon ébauchant avec Roland et composant, presque en auteur expert, un roman qui aboutit au mariage. L'esprit, les idées et quelques calculs en font d'abord les frais. Puis, de part et d'autre, s'insinuent à la fois, mélange curieux, le sentiment avec sa tendresse et ses orages, les manèges d'une diplomatie compliquée et d'une réflexion puissante. Lemontay écrivit d elle : « La première fois que je la vis, elle réalisait l'idée que je m'étais faite de la petite fille de Vevey, qui a tourné tant de têtes, de la Julie de J.-J. Rousseau. Et quand je l'entendis, l'illusion fut encore plus complète. Mme Roland parlait bien, trop bien. L'amour-propre aurait bien voulu trouver de l'apprêt dans ce qu'elle disait, mais il n y avait pas moyen. C'était simplement une nature trop parfaite. Esprit, bon sens, propriété d'expressions, raison piquante, grâce naïve, tout coulait sans étude entre des dents d'ivoire et des lèvres rosées : force était de s'y résigner. » Marie Philipon n'est pas encore Madame Roland, dont le Salon accueillera le « Tout-Paris révolutionnaire » et les accents ne sont pas ceux des Mémoires qu'elle rédigera en prison, mais le contenu et le style de ses lettres sont déjà posés et sa « stratégie amoureuse » est imparable. La lettre du 23 avril 1779 contient déjà tout son programme, qu'elle appliquera jusqu'à la dernière minute de sa vie, face au couperet de la guillotine : « je puis être victime du sentiment, mais je ne serai jamais le jouet de personne ».
