From the collection of a heavy smoker, so the book and jacket are both smoke damaged, with consumate toning to the edges of the DJ and an odor when the book is opened. Solidly bound, no marks or damage to pages, dustjacket fully intact. Rear panel of DJ is somewhat dampstained and ruffled. Now in broadart. Owners bookplate on interior of board.

(price-clipped) [very light foxing to top edge, otherwise a nice fresh copy with no significant wear; jacket has one tiny chip at top of front panel, also torn with a bit of paper loss at top rear hinge and bottom front hinge, one additional small closed tear at top of rear panel, minor edgewear elsewhere]. Early novel by Burgess, the first of two published under this pseudonym. Satirical novel about a young married couple, "the husband having a sort of brain good an winning quizzes, so he wins The Big Money on a TV quiz and then puts the money on horses and he becomes a rich man. And so then they have the best of everything, like a mink for her and staying at posh hotels [etc.] . but there's always been something niggling in him all the about the world being a rotten place and not even money can buy anything to make the world a less rotten place and so he suggests that they do themselves in." Burgess supposedly limited the novel's vocabulary to just 800 words, part of his message about the dumbing-down of modern media culture -- but he made up for this atypical restraint with "A Clockwork Orange," published the following year. It was reported well over a decade ago that Francis Coppola had acquired the movie rights, but that would seem to have gone into deep turnaround. NOISBN.

This novel was intended as an indictment of what Burgess saw as the degradation of contemporary Western education and culture. He deliberately toned down his trademark love of vocabulary for the story, and the entire vocabulary in One Hand Clapping amounts to approximately 800 words. A strange tale by one of the strangest of English authors.

Burgess' second (and last novel using this pseudonym since he got into strife by publishing under "Kell" and reviewing favourably as Burgess!). A scarce item.

A literary oddity if ever there was one. Inside Mr Enderby is one of two books published under the pseudonym Joseph Kell, on account of the fact that Burgess had written so many novels in a condensed period following a terminal cancer diagnosis (which turned out to not exist) that the publisher asked him to create a separate pseudonym lest readers questioned the quality of so great an output. To make matters more peculiar, this copy is entirely blank, it being merely a dummy, but even so, it was sent out for review to the author Julian Mitchell. Though, tragically, his review of this blank work was never written.

The author's second and final novel published under the pseudonym "Joseph Kell." Burgess famously revealed his identity when, as a reviewer for the Yorkshire Post, he inadvertently reviewed his own earlier Kell novel (ONE HAND CLAPPING, 1961). The exposure caused embarrassment and cost him his reviewing position. INSIDE MR. ENDERBY introduces Enderby, an eccentric and comic poet whose chaotic life reflects Burgess's fascination with the uneasy balance between art and existence. While this first Enderby novel was published under the Kell pseudonym, the remaining three novels in the series were issued under Burgess's own name completing the celebrated Enderby Quartet: INSIDE MR. ENDERBY (1963) ENDERBY OUTSIDE (1968) THE CLOCKWORK TESTAMENT, OR: ENDERBY'S END (1974) ENDERBY'S DARK LADY, OR: NO END TO ENDERBY (1984) Burgess (1917-1993), best known for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1962), published between the two Kell novels, was one of the most versatile literary figures of the 20th century. The Enderby novels remain some of his most enduring comic achievements, blending satire, poetry, and social observation. A true high point for any Burgess collection.

The Dedication Copy, inscribed by the author under his pseudonym to his wife, Hazel (Lynne) Burgess, on the front endpaper in blue ink: "To Hazel / for her birthday / 28th Sept, 1961 / Joseph Kell"-beneath which Burgess has added, in red ink, the revealing note: "Joseph Kell is / Anthony Burgess." This is the second of only two novels published under the "Joseph Kell" pseudonym and among the scarcest Burgess titles to appear with an authorial presentation. The association could not be closer: Burgess dedicated the book to Hazel (Lynne), his first wife, to whom he would dedicate many of his works during their marriage, making this an extraordinary copy in every respect. A very good example, showing some foxing and evidence of use in the publisher's nubby yellow and red spotted cloth, with metallic blue spine lettering. Housed in a near fine, bright blue pictorial dustwrapper (price-clipped, and likely supplied). Burgess (1917-1993), best remembered for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1962), published the year after ONE HAND CLAPPING, was one of the most versatile literary figures of the 20th century. This novel-written under the Kell pseudonym-reflects his early exploration of cultural decline, materialism, and the "dumbing down" of society, themes that would continue to haunt his work. A true high point for any Burgess collection. Signed by Author.

Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, âTo dear Si with affection 'Joeâ(Anthony/John.â The recipient, Si Litvinoff was the executive producer for Stanley Kubrickâs film A Clockwork Orange that was based on Burgessâ 1962 dystopian novel. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with a small chip to the front panel, with Litvinoff's signature to the front free endpaper. Jacket design by Charles Gorman. An exceptional association.

A first edition, first printing of 'One Hand Clapping' published by Peter Davies in 1961. A near fine book without inscriptions (previous owner's bookplate to pastedown) in a clipped wrapper (price sticker over original) which is near fine and unblemished aside from some rubbing to the corners. Famously reviewed by Burgess for the Yorkshire Post who claimed the novel as one of the best he'd ever read - well you would though. He was promptly sacked. Excessively scarce in nice condition.
