Ajouter au panierLeather. Etat : Near Fine. The second edition of this travel work about an excursion through classical Italy, from Rome to Arpino, illustrated with a folding plate and four plates. The second edition of this work. A scarce work. Illustrated with a folding plate and four plates. Collated, complete. Collated from Jisc from a copy…held at the British Library. Published as part of Richard Phillips' 'New Voyages and Travels', being No.6, Vol IV. Rebound. This work recounts the author's travels from Rome to Arpino, being a grand tour of classical Italy. Arpino was significant, especially for the author, as it was the city where Marcus Tullius Cicero came from, to whom the book is dedicated to. In this work, Kelsall states his shock that there was no monument to Cicero in the Amalthea at Arpino, and includes his design for a monument to Cicero. The work offers a good insight into Italy in the early nineteenth century. Written by Charles Kelsall, a traveller and architect. He designed buildings in varying styles, including Grecian. His other works were 'Remarks Touching Geography Especially that of the British Isles' and 'Esquisse de mes travaux, de mes voyages, et de mes opinions'. In 1841 Kelsall bought a villa in Hampshire and named it Villa Amalthea, putting busts of poets and scholars in the gardens. Rebound in a quarter morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean, with only a couple of very light spots, a little heavier to the folding plate. Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrateur). book.
