Moreover, anyone interested in modern international history must reflect on the European and global events and processes that took place during the turbulent decades between 1914 and 1945 and, in particular, on their interconnections. What exactly are the lessons of this his- tory? Judging from the consequences of the two world wars, it is reasonable to conclude that major modern wars seldom bring lasting peace, that the enmities, brutalization, and mobi- lization of one conflagration can easily trigger another. And even when a war comes to an end, the structures, mentalities, and worldviews it produced are not easily dismantled. As the European interwar period demonstrates, major wars bring painful, revanchist memories with them; and these, in turn, can foster the kinds of internal and international conditions that lead to further conflict. -- That democratic states do not start wars is a lesson that can be substantiated by both world wars. But how do major wars affect democracy? Can we, with our understanding of the aftermath of the First World War, conclude that democracy draws strength from the sacrifices made during a major mod- ern war? Are rifles naturally replaced with ballot boxes? Does the decolonization that occurred after the Second World" -- ISBN 9781644698792 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 540.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Lessons of history are often referred to in public discourse, but seldom in scholarly discussions. This book seeks to change this by introducing an innovative analytical model of historical lessons, starting from the basic three-fold perspective that everyone simultaneously is history, shares history, and makes history. Not all history, however, is useful for extracting lessons. Here, what are called borderline historical events, which demonstrate both time-specific and time-transcending qualities, are suggested as useful didactic material. Scholarly works on the Holocaust and Soviet terror, from Raul Hilberg's and Robert Conquest's classical works of the 1960s, to more recent books by Jan Gross and Timothy Snyder, are analyzed to identify lessons of history, and how they have changed during a full half-century.…

Today, the situation is radically different. The Holocaust is intensely and widely discussed in many states and societies. The discussions reflect various interests and needs, among them aesthetic, commercial, cultural, existential, ideological, legal, moral, political and scholarly. By means of a common history-cultural approach, in which history is analysed in relationship to phenomena such as historical consciousness, memory and trauma, the authors of this anthology analyse such various topics as Israeli efforts to commemorate the rescuing of the Bulgarian Jews, and the discussions in Denmark concerning January 27 as an Auschwitz memorial day. This book is the second collection of reports from The Holocaust and European Historical Culture, a research project based at Lund University, Sweden. The aim of the project, initiated in 2001, is to study the interpretations and representations of the Holocaust in various post-war European societies and states.…
