Beachtung fand er jedoch v.a. als Historiker und Bahnbrecher der kritischen Quellenforschung, der in den ?Urkunden zur Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde? und der ?Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde? ein neues Bild der Gründung der Eidgenossenschaft schuf. Im Gegensatz zu Johannes von Müller stützte sich Kopp ganz auf urkundliche Überlieferungen, eliminierte die volkstümlichen Elemente der Befreiungstradition wie Tell oder Rütlischwur und bewertete die bislang verfemten Habsburger positiv. Broschur mit Lagerspuren, durchgehend gering fleckig, insgesamt jedoch gutes Exemplar der seltenen Sammlung von Verträgen (Abschieden) zwischen 1291 und 1420. Mit Ausnahme der Quelle vom 1. August 1291, die in Latein verfasst ist, sind alle Quellen im vergleichsweise gut lesbaren Deutsch der damaligen Zeit auf Schweizer Gebiet gehalten. Joseph Eutych Kopp (1793-1866), Luzerner Grossrat und Verfassungsrat, führte als Historiker die kritische Quellenforschung ein, wobei er sich lediglich historisch belegbarer Quellen, also der Originalurkunden, bediente.
