Soft cover. Etat : As New. 1st Edition. 20 pp, first edition. APPEARS NEW! An artist-produced exhibition of contemporary Native work in various media, organized in anticipation of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's so-called discovery of the Americas. The title is itself the exhibition's political statement: a deliberate counter-move to the celebratory framing already gathering momentum for 1992, insisting on an Indigenous perspective that had no reason to celebrate the event. The five artists whose work it documents are Shirley Bear, Lance Belanger, Maria Cisneros, Paul Clair, and Ron Noganosh.Shirley Bear (1936-2022) was a Wolastoqiyik artist, poet, traditional herbalist, and activist from Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, part of the Wabanaki Confederacy. She studied photography and painting at the Whistler House Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and received a Ford Foundation fellowship in 1969. Her gestural, painterly canvases drew extensively on Wabanaki cultural history and symbolism. She was a vocal advocate for pre-contact gender equity in Indigenous societies and in 1990 curated the touring exhibition Changers: A Spiritual Renaissance, a survey of art by Native women. She was named to the Order of Canada in 2011. Major works held by the New Brunswick Art Bank include Crane Woman, Abenaki Woman, and Moose with a Woman's Spirit.Ron Noganosh (1949-2017) was an Ojibwe artist born in Magnetawan, Ontario, from the Magnetawan First Nation near Parry Sound. He came to fine art through backgrounds in graphic design and welding, entering the University of Ottawa fine arts program in 1980, where he discovered collage, assemblage, and installation as his primary modes. He became one of the most significant Indigenous artists working in Ottawa, recognized as a pioneer in assemblage work combining traditional materials with found objects and consumer detritus, deploying humour and irony as tools for political critique. Central to his work were the complex and intertwined issues of survival in contemporary Native communities — language, the environment, territory, culture, identity, health, and self-governance — alongside an insistence that these issues were inseparable from broader global concerns.
