A collection of romances, which are fairy tales written in a specific tradition, gathered by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a Scottish author and literary critic. In his Preface, Andrew briefly describes what the definition of romance is and also credits his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang (nee Alleyne; 1851-1933), as having written all of the fairy tales herein which are based on the "old romances." Leonora was an English author, editor, and translator and collaborated with her husband on the Fairy Books series from 1889-1913 in those various capacities. Notably, while Andrew became famous for the Fairy Books series, most of them were written, translated, and edited by Leonora and a small group of other writers, most of whom were women. Their process was to adapt old fairy tales into English translations written in a style that was more palatable to a contemporary audience. Presented herein are many romances. The titles of the romances are as follows: "How William of Palermo was carried off by the Werwolf," "The Disenchantment of the Werwolf," "The Slaying of Hallgerda's Husbands," "The Death of Gunnar," "Njal's Burning," "The Lady of Solace," "Una and the Lion," "How the Red Cross Knight slew the Dragon," "Amys and Amyle," "The Tale of the Cid," "The Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance," "The Adventure of the Two Armes who turned out to be Flocks of Sheep," "The Adventure of the Bobbing Lights," "The Helmet of Mambrino," "How Don Quixote was Enchanted while guarding the Castle," "Don Quixote's Home-coming," "The Meeting of Huon and Oberon, King of the Fairies," "How Oberon saved Huon," "Havelok and Goldborough," "Cupid and Psyche," "Sir Bevis the Strong," "Ogier the Dane," "How the Ass became a Man again," "Guy of Warwick," "How Bradamante conquered the Wizard," "The Ring of Bradamante," "The Fulfilling of the Prophecy," "The Knight of the Sun," and "How the Knight of the Sun rescued his Father.".

A collection of fairy tales gathered by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a Scottish author and literary critic. In his Preface, Lang notes that this Yellow Fairy Book is the fourth in his fairy tale series following the Blue, Red, and Green Fairy Books. In response to his critics, he humorously quips that he has no regrets in publishing yet another Fairy Book for his "jury" of children readers have spoken and voiced their approval of the series. Presented herein are many fairy tales taken from a variety of sources. A sampling of the tales include six brothers who are turned into swans, witches who plot dastardly plans, valiant princes and princesses in distress, a hunter who encounters magical cabbage, an Indigenous boy who meets an otherworldly fate after being abandoned by his siblings, and a prince who seeks to rescue the Flower Queen's daughter from dragons in a golden castle. Andrew also credits his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang (nee Alleyne; 1851-1933), and a team of other authors and translators, as having written all of the fairy tales herein which are based on old sources from a variety of cultures. Leonora was an English author, editor, and translator and collaborated with her husband on the Fairy Books series from 1889-1913 in those various capacities. Hardcover. Etat : Good. Small quarto, 366 pages, deckle-edges, boards, rebacked with paper, paper label on spine. Copy no. 18 of only 150 in large-paper. Black-and-white illustrations by H. J. Ford. This is the 3rd book in this series, and Lang promised no more in his Introduction; but that promise was to be broken many times. This volume includes "The Story of the Three Bears": this is the first variant of the tale in which the human visitor is an old woman. Here are other tales from French, Spanish, and Chinese sources. Here also is a different version of "The Three Little Pigs". It is known that J.R.R. Tolkien had read and commented upon this book, so he must have known "The Enchanted Watch" and "The Enchanted Ring", at least one of which may have given JRRT some ideas. First, Limited Edition & Large-Paper Edition.
