His wife Leonora was extremely well-educated herself, having translated a history of Russia from the French and written several other books of her own. However, they are both remembered best for their series of 12 fairy tale books--beginning with the Blue Fairy Book in 1889 and ending with the Lilac Fairy Book in 1910. These quickly became the most popular gift books of all time and remained so for several decades. It was Andrew Lang's interest in anthropology that led him to collect and publish these folk tales from far-flung lands, most of which were unknown to English readers at the time. And though all of them were published in Andrew's name, his role was largely editorial--a great deal of the translating, adapting and rewriting was done by his wife Leonora and others. This husband and wife team next applied their highly successful formula for choosing, researching and adapting folk tales to the stories of the saints, creating The Book of Saints and Heroes in 1912, with a result that is both inspiring and fun to read. Add the illustrations by H.J. Ford, whose creations illuminated the Fairy Books, and you have a book which makes an ideal gift for any child.Softcover, 5.5" x 8.5" Number of Pages: 342. book.

A collection of romances, which are fairy tales written in a specific tradition, gathered by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a Scottish author and literary critic. In his Preface, Andrew briefly describes what the definition of romance is and also credits his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang (nee Alleyne; 1851-1933), as having written all of the fairy tales herein which are based on the "old romances." Leonora was an English author, editor, and translator and collaborated with her husband on the Fairy Books series from 1889-1913 in those various capacities. Notably, while Andrew became famous for the Fairy Books series, most of them were written, translated, and edited by Leonora and a small group of other writers, most of whom were women. Their process was to adapt old fairy tales into English translations written in a style that was more palatable to a contemporary audience. Presented herein are many romances. The titles of the romances are as follows: "How William of Palermo was carried off by the Werwolf," "The Disenchantment of the Werwolf," "The Slaying of Hallgerda's Husbands," "The Death of Gunnar," "Njal's Burning," "The Lady of Solace," "Una and the Lion," "How the Red Cross Knight slew the Dragon," "Amys and Amyle," "The Tale of the Cid," "The Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance," "The Adventure of the Two Armes who turned out to be Flocks of Sheep," "The Adventure of the Bobbing Lights," "The Helmet of Mambrino," "How Don Quixote was Enchanted while guarding the Castle," "Don Quixote's Home-coming," "The Meeting of Huon and Oberon, King of the Fairies," "How Oberon saved Huon," "Havelok and Goldborough," "Cupid and Psyche," "Sir Bevis the Strong," "Ogier the Dane," "How the Ass became a Man again," "Guy of Warwick," "How Bradamante conquered the Wizard," "The Ring of Bradamante," "The Fulfilling of the Prophecy," "The Knight of the Sun," and "How the Knight of the Sun rescued his Father.".
