Monograph on Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), the New Orleans photographer whose staged, multiple-exposure images of decaying Louisiana plantations, cemeteries, and veiled figures made him the leading American Surrealist in the medium. Published as part of the Hallmark Photographic Collection series (with the Barnard, Callahan, and Webb volumes), drawing on the more than 120 Laughlin prints in that collection and on the master-print archive Laughlin gave to The Historic New Orleans Collection in 1981. Three essays: Keith F. Davis on the early work (A Forest of Symbols), John H. Lawrence on Laughlin's unfinished Poems of the Interior World series, and Nancy C. Barrett on the architectural photographs (Brick and Wood and Spirit). Plates range from 1930s industrial abstractions and New Orleans street scenes to the plantation and cemetery images of the 1940s and the "Ghosts Along the Mississippi" era, each reproduced with Laughlin's own titles.
