Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Very Good. This attractive 1950 edition commemorates the landmark recording of "Goodnight, Irene" by The Weavers with Gordon Jenkins and His Orchestra, released on Decca Records shortly after Lead Belly's death. Although the song was originally copyrighted in 1936 following John Lomax's documentation of Lead B…elly's repertoire, the Weavers' recording became one of the defining musical events of 1950, spending thirteen weeks at No. 1 and helping launch the American folk revival into the popular mainstream. The cover features a photographic portrait of The Weavers - Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman, and Ronnie Gilbert - with an inset portrait of arranger Gordon Jenkins, whose lush orchestration introduced the song to millions of listeners. Condition is Very Good. Complete and firmly bound with crisp pages and no writing or ownership markings visible. The cover retains strong contrast and clean photographic images with only light edge wear, mild corner softening, and gentle age toning. There is an area of ghosting in the upper right corner, likely from a previous price tag. Interior music pages are bright and clean with only minor handling wear. The rear advertisement for "Hop-Scotch Polka (Scotch Hot)" remains sharp and complete with light toning and modest edge wear. Overall, this is an above-average surviving example of a sheet that was widely purchased and heavily played. This edition represents an important crossroads in American music history. Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) learned and developed "Goodnight, Irene" decades before it became a commercial success, and folklorist John Lomax helped preserve it through Library of Congress field recordings and publication. The Weavers' polished 1950 recording softened some of Lead Belly's darker verses - including references to morphine and suicide - but introduced the song to a national audience, selling over two million copies and becoming Billboard's biggest hit of 1950. As a result, this Spencer Music issue stands as one of the signature pieces of the early American folk revival. Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter (1888-1949) was one of America's most influential folk and blues musicians. His vast repertoire included work songs, ballads, spirituals, children's songs, and blues, many of which became standards after being documented by folklorists John and Alan Lomax. John Avery Lomax (1867-1948) was among the pioneering American folklorists whose field recordings and publications preserved countless traditional songs that otherwise might have disappeared. Together, their collaboration fundamentally shaped twentieth-century folk music scholarship and performance.

hardcover. Etat : As New. Prima edizione (First Edition). Introduzione di Tom Waits. Testid i Tyehimba. Postfazione di Glenn O'Brien. Fotografie ed illustrazioni a colori e in bianco e nero. Biografie . Cm 30,5x23,5. pp. 256. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Ajouter au panierEtat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good-. 1st Edition. 8vo. A beautiful 1936 1st Edition in the RARE original publisher dust jacket. An oral autobiography of Lead Belly, born Huddie William Ledbetter (1888-1949), features original lyrics and scores in addition to life stories and other biographical material. Lead Belly… was a gifted musician, usually playing a 12-string guitar, but also proficient on the mandolin, accordion, piano, harmonica and violin. Lead Belly served several prison sentences over the course of a 24 year period, ending in 1939, for a variety of charges, including twice for murder. It was during one of these sentences that he was 'discovered' by the Lomaxes, who were working on a project for the Library of Congress recording different styles of Southern music. They recorded hundreds of his songs during 1933 and 1934 and the rest, as they say, is history. Tan cloth with titling stamped in red to the front board and spine. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for the small name 'Huddy Ledbetter' (not Lead Belly's signature), written in pencil to the front pastedown. Mild rubbing and edge wear with some light soiling to binding. Dust jacket with moderate soiling and edge wear, mainly along the top. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.
