Two original water colour preliminary drawings by Albert Lemasson. Featuring the altar and frescoe of the church of St Lucie de Moulineaux, Issy-les-Moulineaux, Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France. Lemasson painted the fresco in the church, which was built in 1937 by Charles Venner (1890-1981), an architect specializing in religious architecture. This is painted onto a blank sheet of stiff paper, 50cm x 32.5cm. To the blank verso are a few paint test lines. This is quite an advanced water colour, possibly the final proof. Signed by the artist below the work. The second sheet, shows in initial sketch in watercolour for an older, and more traditional church design, featuring Mary and some angels. This has been painted onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Lemasson provided thirty colour lithographs for this work by Gabriel Hanotaux, celebrating the fortified churches of the Thiérache region (along the French / Belgian border). 38cm x 34cm. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. Besides frescoes, he painted a variety of works including portraits, landscapes, and scenes from his travels in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece using oil, watercolor, ink, and other mediums. He exhibited his works in several galleries in Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux over many decades. .…

Two original water colour preliminary drawings by Albert Lemasson. Featuring the dome and features / characters around a church including an upside down Crucifixion. St Peter was the primary saint who was crucified upside down and the dome does appear to be similar to St Peter's in Rome, so we suspect that this is the subject.Tthe second showing (it would appear) the martyrdom of several Chrisians. Both have been painted onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Lemasson provided thirty colour lithographs for this work by Gabriel Hanotaux, celebrating the fortified churches of the Thiérache region (along the French / Belgian border). It is possible that these are an initial proof for the book. Each image is 21.5cm x 14cm. The sheet is 38cm x 56cm. Unusually, Lemasson hasn't identified the topic or signed the sheets (other examples we have sold have all identified the subject). It is more likely that these are early sketches for some of his works showing Rome. The sheet is somewhat foxed and darkened, with a little edgewear. Still an interesting and attractive pair of water colours. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. A attractive water colour of the woods and short of Lége Cap Ferret by Lemasson. The work has been painted onto glassine, which has then been laid onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Lemasson provided thirty colour lithographs for this work by Gabriel Hanotaux, celebrating the fortified churches of the Thiérache region (along the French / Belgian border). The painting is nicely coloured and showed a stylised view of the woods, with a figure in the middle ground looking out to sea. This is probably a preliminary sketch for a larger work, as the edges are not neatly finished, and a finished work would be unlikely to have a proof for a book as backing card. The title is written into a dune, and Lemasson liked it so much he signed it twice! Some edgewear and chipping / creasing with closed tears and fractional loss to the edges. An attractive piece. 38cm x 57cm. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. An original ink sketch of Royaumont by Albert Lemasson. It shows the interior of the courtyard of the Abbey. A sketch in ink, and signed in ink by the artist to the bottom right. Also signed to the bottom left. 33cm x 50.5cm. The work has clearly been hung at some point, and has the remnant of tape to the rear. Overall a very clean sheet, with just a touch of darkening. A nice sketch. Royaumont Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery located in the hamlet of Baillon in Asnières-sur-Oise in the Val-d'Oise, about thirty kilometers north of Paris. An original ink sketch of Montmartre / Sacré Coeur by Albert Lemasson. It shows the clearly identifiable horizon of the church. A quick sketch in ink, and signed in ink by the artist to the bottom right. Also signed to the bottom left. There is a description of the work in pencil by the artist. 25cm x 32cm. The work has clearly been removed from a sketch album. Overall a very clean sheet, with just a touch of darkening. A nice Paris sketch. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. An original ink sketch of St Peter's in Rome by Albert Lemasson. An attractive ink wash / black and grey water colour of the most famous church in the world. A nice view, with the foreground fountain much fainter, which allows the basillica and dome to be seen clearly. 32.5cm x 50cm. Signed and named to the bottom right edge. Mainly clean, with a few pencil marks still evident (this is probably a preparatory sketch). There is a little darkening to the edges and a few very light foxing spots. Blank and clean to the rear. Two original water colour drawings of church architectural detail by Albert Lemasson. Both are lovely representations of medieval church architecture. The first is for a rez-de-chaussée (level floor change) in a chapelle at Frejus. Frejus is on the Côte d'Azur and hosts Léonce Cathedral which has painted cloisters and a baptistry with Roman columns. This is an attractive sketch showing some of the ancient friezes in the cathedral. This is painted onto glassine which has been tipped onto a stiff sheet of card. The card is quite darkened and has a little edgewear. Size of sheet is 34.5cm x 49cm. The second detail is painted directly onto a larger sheet of card. This is a detail of ancient fragments from the Cathedral at Bayeux. It shows the bottom half of Christ cruficied, with two men standing alongside. The water colour is a lovely and accurate representation, showing the damage to the fresco as well as giving a good impression of the detail. Titled in pencil beneath. Painting is 30cm x 43cm. The sheet is 45cm x 58cm. There is a split to the top edge of the sheet where folded, with an old repair to this. Neither sheet is signed, but came from Lemasson's estate, and the handwriting conforms with the other works that came with it. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. An original sketch in black ink by Albert Lemasson. This was possibly intended as a preliminary drawing for a painting, or for a book illustration, as the key architectural features are labelled in pencil. We cannot find and copy of this though. An attractive drawing. Held under a cream passe partout. The artwork is in good condition, but the passe partout is somewhat darkened to the edges, and has some light staining. Pencil title to verso. Sketch is 31cm x 48.5cm. passe partout is 50cm x 65cm. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. Two watercolours on paper (378 x 282 and 282 x 378 mm), sketched in pencil, one with extensive pencil notes, the other signed in ink 'A.Lemasson', both labelled in pencil to verso 'Saint Mars du Desert'; executed on the blank versos of two leaves (proofs?) from Lemasson's LesÉglises de la Thiérache (1938, title and limitation); some slight foxing and staining, pinholes to corners, but generally bright and well preserved. An attractive pair of sketches for Lemasson's frescos in the chancel of the church of StMédard in his hometown of Saint-Mars-du-Désert. A native of Saint-Mars-du-Désert in the Loire-Atlantique, Albert Lemasson (18921982) studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts after his service in the First World War. Although adept in several media, he came to specialise in ecclesiastical frescos, often executed alongside his brother Paul (18971971). The frescos at the church of StMédard were completed during the Second World War, with the two sketches here depicting the apse firstly in perspective and secondly with the five arches shown schematically. The first sketch is closer to the designs as executed, with the Crucifixion on the right and the LastSupper on the left, with further scenes above and around them and rays of light proceeding from the top of the central arch and passing through other scenes into neighbouring arches; the second sketch shows considerable variation from this scheme, with extensive pencil notes many crossed through suggesting a degree of experimentation.…
