Inscription in old hand to t.p.: 'N D de la Trappe Stapehill': the community de la Sainte Croix de Notre Dame de la Trappe, a small group of Cistercian nuns fleeing the French Revolution, founded Stapehill Abbey in 1802, the site having been given to them by the 8th Lord Arundell of Wardour.
