Das Verhältnis zu seiner Wahlheimat ist aber immer ambivalent geblieben. Die Permaneder- Episode in den Buddenbrooks wird man kaum als eine Liebeserklärung lesen können; und auch in der Erzählung, die mit den Worten München leuchtete beginnt, erscheint München nicht in seinem hellsten Licht. In offiziellen Äußerungen hat sich Thomas Mann stets mit konventioneller Höflichkeit über München geäußert; und im Gegenzug richtete die Stadt eine große Feier zum 50. Geburtstag ihres berühmt gewordenen Schriftsteller-Bürgers aus, die ihn aber nicht recht zufrieden stellte. Noch in seiner Dankesrede während der Feier am 6. Juni 1925 bescheinigt er kaum verhüllt der Stadt eine Lebensfreundlichkeit, die recht einfältig und robust sei ein zweifelhaftes Kompliment. Als 17 Jahre später im September 1942 München zum zweiten Mal bombardiert wird, notiert der Emigrant in seinem Tagebuch davon Notiz: Der alberne Platz hat es geschichtlich verdient. Ein böses Wort. Aber es hat seinen Grund: München hatte seinem wenig geliebten Mitbürger Thomas Mann mit dem Protest der Richard-Wagner-Stadt München schon im April 1933 zu verstehen gegeben, dass er in der Stadt nicht mehr erwünscht sei. Die Rückkehr nach München nach dem Krieg gestaltet sich schwierig. Die Lockrufe der Inneren Emigration nach einer baldigen Rückkehr nach Deutschland hat er bekanntlich barsch zurückgewiesen, und auch einem Besuch seiner langjährigen Heimatstadt hat er lange ablehnend gegenübergestanden. Am Ende kam es doch dazu: 1949, anlässlich seiner beiden Goethe-Vorträge in Weimar und Frankfurt, kommt Thomas erstmals wieder in das zerstörte München zurück und hält hier seinen Vortrag Goethe und die Demokratie.
