Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. For the past 15 years, Croatian artist David Maljkovic has been fascinated with the French car company Peugeot and its futuristic "concept cars" conceived in the 1980s to model what the car industry would look like in the 2000s--now evidence of a long-gone belief in progress and technology. In his film "Out of Projection" (2009-2015), filmed at Peugeot headquarters and innovation campus in Sochaux, automobile prototypes and former employees serve as symbolic links between past and future. Centered on this landmark work, which is presented through related projects, archive, documentation and film stills, this artist's book constitutes an emblematic case study of David Maljkovic's practice and obsessions.Designed by London-based graphic design studio Abake, the volume is published as the editorial sequel of the exhibition "In Low Resolution," held at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in 2014 and co-organized with Festival d'Automne (Paris). Besides publishing previously unseen material, it also comprises an essay by curator and art critic Francois Piron as well as an interview with Julien Fronsacq, curator of the Palais de Tokyo exhibition.Born in 1973 in Croatia, David Maljkovic lives in Zagreb and Berlin.Including films, sculpture, collage and installations, his work constitutes a critical research into the legacies of modernism (initially the architectural symbols and sculptural forms of former socialist Yugoslavia and Eastern Europe). He investigates these remnants from the past in relationship with the present but also with their potential--real or fictional--in an imminent or distant future, at the crossroads between science fiction and documentary film. Maljkovic is also particularly interested in exhibition strategies and the semiotics of display. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

"The exhibition When things cast no shadow consisted of two parts one taking place by day, one by night. The daytime part of the 5th Berlin Biennale presented mainly new productions by 50 artists of four generations shown at four different venues--at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and the Schinkel Pavilion. Many of the participating artists conceptualized and built their commissioned artworks explicitly in response to the specifically designated exhibition site. Already a few weeks prior to the official opening the first in a series of five solo exhibitions (curated by artists participating in the biennial) was launched at the Schinkel Pavilion as part of the 5th Berlin Biennale. Throughout the duration of the biennial these exhibitions gave insights into ways in which younger artists deal with topics such as the legacy of previous generations, modernity or various exhibition formats." -- publisher''s statement. Uitvoerig geà llustreerd in kleur en zwart-wit. Prima exemplaar met lichte gebruikssporen. The 17th issue of A Prior brings together four participants in the 5th Berlin Biennial, who all hail from what were often deemed âproblemâ zones within the European geopolitical sphere of Eastern Europe â" Croatia, Estonia, Romania. The research-based artistic practices of Zagreb-based Croatian artist David Maljkovic, Kristina Norman from Estonia, and the Berlin-based Romanian artist Daniel Knorr, share a number of interesting characteristics (needless to say that they are also, thankfully, wildly divergent), but foremost among them is perhaps a shared readiness to attend to the fragmented testimony of historyâs material traces in their respective old or newly adopted home countries. As such, their work shares a distinct enthusiasm for things, be they minute scraps of paper or giant monuments left to rust in the wilderness of the post-political. These things are understood as active repositories of historical memory â" an essentially optimistic, yet elegiac brand of dialectical materialism pervades these artistsâ practice, one that thrives particularly well in a self-consciously nostalgic metropolis such as Berlin. …
