George Edward Mannering (GEM) and Marmaduke John Dixon (MJD)were pioneers of mountaineering in New Zealand, being associated with the Hermitage, near Mount Cook, from the mid-1880s. Using the papers, letters, diaries, and records of these climbers Guy Mannering (a gandson of GEM) has provided an illuminating flashback on early mountaineering in the Southern Alps. The pair and their associates climbed, traversed and explored many alpine areas, including first ascents of a number of peaks.The direct quotations, using the idiom of the time, brings a realism and ambience to the accounts selected by Guy Mannering. Many of the famous names from early mountaineering crop up in this remarkable record.
