Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - In this deeply personal Christian memoir, Elder Marcus A. Houston reflects on the accumulated weight of losing his parents and seven brothers while learning how to grieve without surrendering his faith in God. Through memories of long drives, missed conversations, family distance, military service, ministry, final visits, and unexpected moments of grace, he explores how sorrow changes the people who remain.Houston writes honestly about regret, unanswered questions, complicated family relationships, and the fear of losing another opportunity to say what should be said. Yet this is not a story of grief having the final word. It is a testimony to the God who remains present when faith feels weak, prayer becomes difficult, and the burden becomes too heavy to carry alone.Written for grieving people, their families, pastors, and anyone learning to live faithfully after loss, this book offers companionship rather than easy answers-and hope without denying the pain. …

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Early American Grosset & Dunlap edition of Who Shall Hang?, a scarce Golden Age murder mystery by Marcus Magill, the pseudonym associated with British mystery writers Brian Hill and Joanna Elder Giles. Copyright page states "Copyright, 1929, by Brian Hill" and "Printed in the United States of America." Title page bears the Grosset & Dunlap, New York imprint. A classic country-house mystery centered upon a Guy Fawkes celebration: during a house party, host Maurice Strang disappears, only for the evening's festivities to reveal a decidedly macabre development. An appealing example of the obscure and increasingly rediscovered Golden Age school of British detective fiction. Marcus Magill produced only a small group of mysteries, including Who Shall Hang?, Death in the Box, I Like a Good Murder, Murder Out of Tune, Murder in Full Flight, and Hide, And I'll Find You! EXCEPTIONAL LAID-IN ANNE SHIRLEY / PARAMOUNT PICTURES EPHEMERA Of particular interest, this copy retains a vintage color portrait of Hollywood actress Anne Shirley, printed on the image: "Anne Shirley PARAMOUNT PICTURES HOLLYWOOD, CALIF." The reverse is completely blank. The portrait was found laid into this copy and is included with the book. Especially noteworthy is the physical relationship between the photograph and the volume. The portrait is closely sized to the book and fits neatly within it, allowing it to lie flat and protected between the leaves. Its age, condition, dimensions, and manner of preservation strongly suggest that it was intentionally retained with this volume for an extended period, rather than being a recently added piece of ephemera. The photograph exhibits age consistent with a vintage Hollywood promotional piece and appears to have benefited from its long-term protection within the closed book. Anne Shirley, born Dawn O'Day, was a prominent Hollywood actress of the 1930s and 1940s. The use of the professional name "Anne Shirley," together with the Paramount Pictures identification, necessarily places the portrait later than the book's original 1929 publication. Thus the laid-in photograph represents an intriguing later chapter in the history of this particular copy. There is no evidence that Anne Shirley owned this book, and no such association is claimed. Rather, the significance lies in the survival of the vintage Paramount Pictures portrait together with the book and its apparent long-term preservation within this specific copy. An unusual crossover collectible combining Golden Age detective fiction, 1920s mystery publishing, Hollywood history, Paramount Pictures memorabilia, and vintage film-star ephemera. The Anne Shirley portrait will remain with the book as found. Laid-in Anne Shirley portrait: Vintage condition with visible age toning and minor handling/edge wear. Image remains attractive with strong color and detail. Printed identification reads "Anne Shirley / Paramount Pictures / Hollywood, Calif." Reverse completely blank. What makes this copy particularly appealing is not simply the presence of a loose celebrity photograph, but the apparent history represented by the two objects surviving together. The mystery dates from 1929. The Anne Shirley Paramount Pictures portrait necessarily dates from a later period. At some point in the life of this book, a previous owner appears to have deliberately placed the closely fitted Hollywood portrait inside the volume, where it was protected and apparently remained for an extended period. Its original owner's reason for preserving Anne Shirley's portrait inside Who Shall Hang? is now unknown, but the photograph remains exactly the sort of ephemeral personal artifact that frequently disappears as books pass from one generation to another.…

Ajouter au panierhardcover. Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. Publication: London, Ernest Benn Limited, 1928 Formatting: 4to, pp. 52. Condition Report: Near Fine. The publisherâs original blue cloth binding remains exceptionally sharp, with the elaborate gilt foliate borders and spine titling remarkably bright and unoxidised. The boards are tight and square, showing only the faintest whisper of shelf-wear to the extremities. Internally, the volume is remarkably clean and fresh; the text block is firm, and the pages are entirely free from the foxing often found in titles of this period, preserving the crispness of the Alcuin Press typography and the depth of Gheeraertsâs etchings. The rare original dust wrapper has survived well, though it displays characteristic even tanning and minor dust-soiling across the panels, alongside some slight creasing and nibbling to the fragile edges. Unclipped and highly presentable, it remains a robust example. Catalogue Note: A highly attractive 1928 edition of Aesop's fables, presenting twenty-four classic tales translated by the influential seventeenth-century journalist and pamphleteer Sir Roger L'Estrange. L'Estrange's translation, noted for its vernacular vigour and colloquial charm, was originally published in 1692. Here, it is brilliantly paired with the celebrated illustrations of Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. Gheeraerts's etchings, first published in 1567, are considered masterpieces of early Netherlandish printmaking, noted for their exquisite rendering of flora, fauna, and contemporary domestic details. This edition is notable for its handsome production values. The text was beautifully set and printed by the Alcuin Press of Chipping Campden, a prominent Private Press of the era, while the illustrations were delicately reproduced by the Collographic Art Printers. Copies retaining the original dust wrapper, which promotes Ernest Benn's other 'Gift Books' (including William Blake facsimiles) on the rear panel, are notably scarce in commerce. This elegant 1928 production revitalises twenty-four of Aesop's most enduring fables, pairing the earthy, vigorous seventeenth-century prose of Sir Roger L'Estrange with the masterful, intricate etchings of Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. Printed with typographical excellence by the Alcuin Press, it offers a sophisticated, timeless reading experience where classic moral instruction meets the height of early modern book illustration. Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (illustrateur).…

Complete with the original unclipped dust wrapper. A scarce Golden Age detective novel centred on the murder of Penelope Armstrong, a glamorous and divisive young woman whose death leaves a sizeable field of suspects among those who loved, envied or resented her. Marcus Magill was the pseudonym used for a small group of detective novels now generally attributed to Brian Hill (1896-1979) and Joanna Elder Giles (1893-1952). Their six known mysteries appeared between 1929 and 1933, beginning with Who Shall Hang? and Death-in-the-Box. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Woodcut printer's device to title-pages with motto 'Ne extra oleas', woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. Marginal notes in several different old hands to the first two volumes. Head margins faintly toned, occasional light spotting and a bit of foxing to vol. III, vol. I with unobtrusive repair to final leaf. Contemporary vellum with titles very nicely inked to spines, fore-edges turned in, edges lightly sprinkled blue. Vellum a bit dusty, a few small marks, very good indeed. Vol. I has an illegible ownership inscription in an old hand to its ffep, and a second inscription (possibly reading 'W.W. Kosteri') to the title-page. According to Harwood "the most beautiful and correct edition of Seneca.". Dibdin considers it "one of the rarest and dearest of the octavo Variorum classics: its typographical beauty is equal to its editorial correctness. Scholars who possess it will do well to treasure so valuable and commodious a work." This Elzevier edition is unusual in presenting in its third volume the writings of the younger Seneca, which Dibdin notes are omitted in the Antwerp editions. It contains the best notes available: those of the first great modern Senecan, Justus Lipsius in the late sixteenthcentury, and those of the second great Seneca scholar, J. F. Gronovius. Daniel Elzevier's dedication, to Simon Arnauld, Marquis de Pomponne, covertly discusses the part which Elzevier played as printer for an orchestrated anti-Jesuit campaign.
