The book was published in an edition of just 125 copies in conjunction with the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The late Katherine Dunn is best known for her circus novel…, Geek Love. "This limited edition artist's book was inspired by circus route books, popular in America at the turn of the century. The book chronicles the exploits of an imaginary circus during its spring/summer season. Letterpress printed, illustrated and bound by Mare Blocker, text by Mare Blocker and Katherine Dunn. Illustrations are color linoleum and magnesium cuts representing circus performers, one fold-out color lithograph of performing lions and tigers, and two die-cut pages in the shape of animal heads. Book is numbered on the last three digits of the pink ticket on the colophon page. This book was .selected by the NMWA Library Fellows as a winner for the 1991 Artists' Book competition." Istoriato is an Italian narrative style of pottery decoration which uses the pottery body solely as support for a purely pictorial effect. Orig…inating about 1500 in Faenza, Italy, paintings comparable in seriousness to Italian Renaissance easel paintings were applied to Maiolica ware. The subjects, biblical, historical, and mythological scenes, are executed with a realism (including the use of perspective) quite unlike any previous pottery decoration. Although violating aesthetic rules in their subordination of shape to decoration, such wares remain works of great skill, as well as beauty. During her Sally R. Bishop residency at the Center, Mare Blocker explored how the design of this pottery changed with the invention of the printing press. Multiple color linoeleum blocks and type were printed on Magnani Pescia. Produced at the Center for Book Arts, each boxed set also includes a unique plate decorated in the style of Maiolica pottery. With two 10 page photocopied stapled drafts of the text sent to Mare Blocker by Katherine Dunn, with hand corrections made by Dunn, Blocker and Stern. With an additional loose 27"x29" lithograph of the centerfold foldout featuring lions and tigers, unused and unfolded, inscribed by Blocker to Stern, "For Chris. From your big cat gal [signed] Mare 1991." [56] pp., illustrated in color with linoleum and magnesium cuts and one foldout lithograph. Bound in publisher's orange and black tiger-striped cloth with a turquoise question mark in glitter on the front cover. Near Fine with slight lean to binding and slight sunning to cloth. An exuberant artist's book chronicling the adventures of an imaginary touring circus, published in an edition of one hundred and twenty-five copies for the National Museum of Women in the Arts, selected by the NMWA Library Fellows as a winner for the 1991 Artists' Book competition.
