Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 374 pages. Published in 2019. The choreographer/author's memoir. One of the most important dance and cultural events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Signed Copy" round gold sticker pasted in front. Presents Mark Morris's "Out Loud: A Memoir". A full-fledged and triumphant collaboration between the iconic American dance figure of our time and the brilliant American novelist Wesley Stace. Takes up where Joan Acocella's ground-breaking and still-definitive biography, "Mark Morris" (1993), published 26 years ago, ends. A lot has obviously happened since then (Morris still requires every new dancer of his company to read Acocella's book), and Mark fills us in, with his characteristic and endearing grace, humor, and brilliance. Morris is one of the culture heroes of our time, a fact and stature that his memoir, for all its genuine humility and self-deprecation, celebrates and confirms: "Morris emerged as one of the great visionaries of modern dance, a force of nature with a dedication to beauty and a love of the body, an artist as joyful as he is provocative. 'Out Loud' is the big-hearted and outspoken story of a man as formidable on the page as he is on the boards. With unusual candor and disarming wit, Morris captures the life of a performer who broke the mold, a brilliant maverick who found his home in the collective and liberating world of music and dance" (Publisher's blurb). Long before "disruption" became the tiresome Silicon Valley/advertising/corporate cliche that it is today, Mark Morris was disrupting, with each new work, modern dance and contemporary Western culture itself. An absolute "must-have" title for Mark Morris and Wesley Stace collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on publisher's tipped-in page by Mark Morris and on the title page by Mark Morris and Wesley Stace. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. They made a one-time-only appearance together. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event during which their signatures were obtained. This title is a contemporary classic, and will be regarded as a great memoir. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Mark Morris made only one appearance with Wesley Stace. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with magnificent color plates. The greatest American choreographer of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARK MORRIS AND JOAN ACOCELLA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0735223076. Signed by Author.…

Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. First Printing [Stated]. x, 239, [7] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Index. Inscribed on the half-title by the author. Mark Stephen Monmonier (born 2 February 1943) is a Distinguished Professor of Geography at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. He specializes in toponymy, geography, and geographic information systems. His popular written works show a combination of serious study and a sense of humor. Most of his work is published by University of Chicago Press. He has appeared on National Public Radio interview programs. For example, in his work, From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow: how maps name, claim, and inflame, Monmonier discusses topics such as: the propensity of conquerors to rename places after those friendly to the new regime; the tension between place names assigned by the federal Board on Geographic Names and state and local government agencies; and the effects of political correctness and racism on place names. In Spying with Maps, the author looked at the increased use of geographic data, satellite imagery, and location tracking across a wide range of fields such as military intelligence, law enforcement, market research, and traffic engineering. Could these diverse forms of geographic monitoring lead to grave consequences for society? To assess this very real threat, I examine how geospatial technology works, what it can reveal, who uses it, and to what effect. Maps, as we know, help us find our way around. But they're also powerful tools for someone hoping to find you. Widely available in electronic and paper formats, maps offer revealing insights into our movements and activities, even our likes and dislikes. In Spying with Maps, the "mapmatician" Mark Monmonier looks at the increased use of geographic data, satellite imagery, and location tracking across a wide range of fields such as military intelligence, law enforcement, market research, and traffic engineering. Could these diverse forms of geographic monitoring, he asks, lead to grave consequences for society? To assess this very real threat, he explains how geospatial technology works, what it can reveal, who uses it, and to what effect. Despite our apprehension about surveillance technology, Spying with Maps is not a jeremiad, crammed with dire warnings about eyes in the sky and invasive tracking. Monmonier's approach encompasses both skepticism and the acknowledgment that geospatial technology brings with it unprecedented benefits to governments, institutions, and individuals, especially in an era of asymmetric warfare and bioterrorism. Monmonier frames his explanations of what this new technology is and how it works with the question of whether locational privacy is a fundamental right. Does the right to be left alone include not letting Big Brother (or a legion of Little Brothers) know where we are or where we've been? What sacrifices must we make for homeland security and open government? With his usual wit and clarity, Monmonier offers readers an engaging, even-handed introduction to the dark side of the new technology that surrounds us from traffic cameras and weather satellites to personal GPS devices and wireless communications.
