The original brochure catalogue for two concurrent exhibitions: "9 Linocuts" held at Gallery AOP, Johannesburg, South Africa, July 3 - 24, 2010; and "Embroideries" at Artist Proof Studio, Johannesburg, July 3 - 15, 2010. The artists in "9 Linocuts" were Botha (Elza Miles), Joel Mpah Dooh, Sandile Goje, Phillemon Hlungwani, Colbert Mashile, Dikgwele Paul Molete, Walter Oltmann, Motsamai Thabane, and Diane Victor. The "Embroideries" exhibition featured five large-scale linocuts on fabric, embroidered and beaded, with: linocut by Tamar Mason and beading and embroidery by the Kosikona Project; Dooh/the Jah Azania group; Molete/the Ikageng Project; Bronwen Findley/the Umcebo Trust; and Goje/the Hillcrest AIDS Centre. All the artworks are pictured. Single sheet of glossy paper, printed both sides; 16.5 x 24 inches; with artist's statements and brief bios. Condition: Near Fine with a tiny tear at one fold and hints of handling; machine-folded as issued. Will be sandwiched securely between stiff layers of cardboard and shipped the next business day. First edition in this form. Signed by the author and the artist. Original dark brown cloth with paper title inlays lettered in brown and grey to the spine and upper board. With a signed, numbered print by Colbert Mashile, in a cloth chemise. The book and print are housed together in a brown cloth slipcase. Illustrated with a black and white linocut by Mashile. A very near fine copy, the binding square and tight, the extremities very faintly rubbed. The contents are clean and bright throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. The print is in fine condition. Complete with the fine slipcase. A lovely copy. Issued in a limited edition of 300 copies, this example is numbered 111 and signed by J. M. Coetzee in black ink on the title page. The print is signed by Colbert Mashile in pencil along the bottom edge. A further 35 deluxe copies and 15 hors d' commerce unsigned copies were also issued. Only the deluxe issue, numbered 1-35 in roman numerals, is stated as including the print and slipcase, making this example, numbered 111, something of an anomaly. A special edition of the first chapter of Coetzee's Booker Prize-winning novel 'Life and Times of Michael K', issued by the Oak Tree Press, a private press that donates its profits to organisations assisting children living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, as the first volume in their 'First Chapters' series.
