Gorgeous collection of 20 tales from Shakespeare's plays, retold in story form for all ages by British children's author Edith Nesbitt, with gorgeous pen-and-ink Victorian illustrations by Max Bihn throughout the 317 pages, along with his 4-color Frontispiece + 7 internal plates--all virtually flawless save for a tiny tear to bottom edge of plate pp. 182-183. Also includes a name pronunciation guide & several pages of famous quotations in rear. Orig. published in the UK in 1907 by Hertel, Jenkins, this is the FIRST US EDITION from D. E. Cunningham of Chicago, same year. Hardcover (6.75" x 9") has matte black cloth-covered boards blindstamped with an elaborate design to front cover & spine, lettered in faded green to both. Condition is VG: quite clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning, completely unmarked save for old gift inscription to verso of frontis. Exterior shows rather heavy rubbing to extremities, with heavy bumping (& some cloth loss) to corners & both ends of spine. (Max) Bihn illustrations. 20 x 35 cm (7.75 x 13.5") paper covers, [16] pp, (unpaginated) including covers. Early Saalfield publication with no date or publication number printed on the covers. Red circular "This is a SAALFIELD book" on bottom corner of front cover, with "Made in the U. S. A." below it. Nice color and black and white illustrations by Max Bihn. In acceptable condition. Illustrated covers have a 1" tear along the bottom of the front cover and a few other small nicks and tears and creasing along edges. Moderate overall soiling and aging to covers as well. Covers are split along fold of spine from bottom up to first staple but pages are still attached. Previous owner's gift inscription in ink on inside of front cover (first page of story.
