They have an aptness and basic simplicity which brings them within everyone's reach. (From cover notes) Joan Chandos Baez (born 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, musician and activist. Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. Baez has performed publicly for over 60 years, releasing over 30 albums. Fluent in Spanish and English, she has also recorded songs in at least six other languages. Baez is generally regarded as a folk singer, but her music has diversified since the counterculture era of the 1960s and encompasses genres such as folk rock, pop, country and gospel music. She began her recording career in 1960 and achieved immediate success. Her first three albums, Joan Baez, Joan Baez, Vol. 2 and Joan Baez in Concert, all achieved gold record status. Although a songwriter herself, Baez generally interprets other composers' work, having recorded songs by the Allman Brothers Band, the Beatles, Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen, Woody Guthrie, Violeta Parra, the Rolling Stones, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, and many others. She was one of the first major artists to record the songs of Bob Dylan in the early 1960s; Baez was already an internationally celebrated artist and did much to popularize his early songwriting efforts. With a substantial inscription by co-author Joan Maynard to Janice Quinter, dated May 18, 2005, which reads, in part: "As I told you -- so much good information is available since this was done in 1983. The work of Dr. Judith Wellman about Weeksville is substantial and there will be a… wonderful new publication A-Borning! Joan." Weeksville was a black settlement in Brooklyn and its restoration and preservation was a corrective to show an entirely neglected part of New York history, and beyond that, we would note, a break from the past of historic preservation inasmuch as it wasn't focused on a mansion or estate ot some other place associated with the upper crust. 23 by 17.5 cm. 49 pp. Many b/w, or really, brown and white, photos documenting both the historic Weeksville and the restoration efforts, with photos of many of the people involved. Note photos were taken with both a flash and without, and the latter look somewhat yellowed. In actuality the flash photos capture the paper color better -- all the leaves are quite white and fresh in appearance.
