"The Purefoy Letters provide a unique and fascinating picture of life in provincial England in the eighteenth century, a life full of human interest , lived far from the wars and battles that convulsed Europe and the political in-fighting that so fascinated London. There is nothing at all like The Purefoy Letters. Eighteenth-century England is described in many memoirs and diaries. Accounts of the shire society and country gentlemen and parsons are rarer and more precious. The nearest equivalent are the fifteenth-century Paston letters. The Purefoys were a gentry family by lineage and inclination. Elizabeth Purefoy, for all of her ninety years of life, lived, worked in and dominated the parish of Shalstone in Buckinghamshire. She tutored her son Henry in the responsibilities of leading such a community. They rarely left the parish. It was for them an entire world. This volume of their letters is a revealing insight into that round of local politics, social visits and parochial duties that made up their life. In them are found the recalcitrant vicars, intemperate poachers, pregnant housemaids and aristocratic patrons that all brought various problems to the Purefoys and their village. Here, too, is an account of the family's dealings with London, which were carried on with hesitation and suspicion." - from the inner front jacket flap. Bennett, Peter (jacket design) (illustrateur).…
