Edizione originale di questa tragedia di ascendenza sofoclea e trissiniana, rappresentata nel 1565 a Venezia dalla Compagnia della Calza in un teatro in legno innalzato da Palladio nel Cortile del Monastero della Carita' dei CanoniciÂRegolari (in seguito Accademia delle Belle Arti). L'A. del testo e' il Conte Pigatti, detto Conte di Monti, o da Monte, o Conte Pigatti da Monte. Fu medico e letterato, tenne la cattedra di medicina all'Universita' di Padova e fu Accademico Olimpico. La tragedia venne pubblicata a cura del poeta vicentino Gio. Battista Maganza, autore della dedicatoria iniziale al patrizio Francesco Pisani, proprietario peraltro del Palazzo di Montagnana,Âcommissionato sempre al Palladio eÂcostruito nel 1552. La tragedia narra la storia del re Aristobolo e di suo fratello Antigono, figli del defunto Ircano, re di Gerusalemme. Il re Aristobolo, resoÂsospettoso da false insinuazioni del fariseo Eleazaro, provoca, involontariamente, la morte del fratello Antigono; riconosciutane in seguito l'innocenza, muore a suaÂvolta di dolore. A proposito del teatro edificato per la rappresentazione della tragedia a Venezia: "Fu commesso a Palladio di innalzare nel qui sopra indicato cortile della Carita' un magnifico teatro di legno. Federico Zuccaro lo dipinse con bei quadri, e lo spettacolo riusci' a perfezione. Era cosi' bello il teatro che lo si lascio' per alcuni anni in piedi, onde soddisfare la pubblica curiosita'. Ã da temersi che esso abbia dato materia al terribile incendio che alcuni anni dopo distrusse quella nobilissima parte del monistero" (G. Parma, "Arti belle dei Veneziani. Memoria", 1837, p. 75). Mantenne il cognome Pigatti fino al conseguimento della laurea, poi assunse quello della madre e solo con esso firmò tutte le sue opere. Note manoscritte ai margini bianchi dell'ultima pagina della "Rime" del Simonetti. Piccole ossidazioni puntiformi sul frontespizio dell'"Antigono".
