Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow's trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act, where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow, and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman, and defended his right to have multiple "wives" as a matter of religious freedom. This copy with "From the Author" on the top margin of the title wrap, apparently presented as a gift from Curtis. 8vo, blue wraps, 42 pp. Apparently a gift copy from Curtis. Near fine overall with minimal wear.…

Pamphlet. Etat : Near Fine. [2], 13, [1] pp. 24mo [15 cm]. Pamphlet in self-wrappers. A single gathering secured only by folding and glue, as issued. Printed on white paper in black ink. The front cover bears the title and author attribution to Heber J. Grant. The rear cover features a halftone photographic illustration of the Salt Lake Temple with a caption. Mild even age-toning and a soft, faint vertical handling fold. A nice, structurally sound, and clean copy. (This variant matches most closely to Flake-Draper 3673, with no date printed, 15cm vertical measurement, and plain printed wraps. See also: Flake/Draper 3669-3672). This tract represents the primary missionary work written by Heber J. Grant (1856-1945) during his tenure as the first president of the LDS Japan Mission (1901-1903). The text provides an introductory overview of Latter-day Saint theology for a Japanese audience, reporting on the First Vision of Joseph Smith, his subsequent martyrdom at Carthage Jail, and concluding with a complete translation of the thirteen Articles of Faith. Documenting the foundational years of the Church's proselytising efforts in Asia, this rare Japanese Mormon imprint predates the first Japanese translation of the Book of Mormon.…

Etat : Good. During the 18401841 session of the Illinois General Assembly, several laws were enacted concerning Nauvoo. These included legislation incorporating the city itself (pp. 5257), establishing the Nauvoo House Association (pp. 131132), incorporating the Nauvoo Agricultural and Manufacturing Association (pp. 139145), and appointing a notary public for the city (p. 190). Beyond defining municipal powers, elections, judicial structures, and the authority to create a university, the "Act to Incorporate the City of Nauvoo" contained a notable provision permitting the formation of a militia. The act authorized the city council to organize residents liable for military service into an independent force known as the "Nauvoo Legion," whose court-martial would consist of commissioned officers empowered to enact and enforce regulations; the legion was also exempted from other military obligations (p. 57). An additional clause attached to the Road Act further allowed any citizen of Hancock County to join the Nauvoo Legion through voluntary enrollment, thereby receiving the privileges granted to that independent military body (p. 223). Key figures named throughout the legislation include Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Orson Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, George Miller, Lyman Wright, John Snyder, and Peter Hawes. Overall a scarce collection, significant in the history of the Mormons' stint in Nauvoo which would end five years later; attractive in a contemporary binding despite the detachment of the boards. We find no copies on the market at the time of writing, and a single auction record (Hindman, 10/8/2020, sold for $3,473). 8vo, contemporary paper covered boards, 359, xxiv pp. With auditor and Treasurer's reports bound at rear. Boards detached, text block excellent, good overall.…

Hardcover. Etat : Good. Hardcover. Full leather (brown). Black labels on the spine. Front hinge cracked, but board still attached. Covers faded unevenly. Binding good and tight. Bookplate from Phillips University Library, Enid Oklahoma on inside front cover, but no other indication of library ownership anywhere. Page are a little bit foxed. Quite an unusual imprint from Bethany VA (now part of West Virginia). Contains Jan-December 1839. 12 issues. Includes Incidents on a Tour of the South. essays in Sin, Christianity among the Sects, letters to and from Campbell. Includes, on page 265-268, a section on the Mormon Bible, written by Matilda Davison, with comment by A. Campbell. The article makes reference to the Boston Recorder of the previous week (May or June of 1839) and Howe's 1834 book "Mormonism Unvailed." About the Book of Mormon, it says, "It was difficult to imagine how a work containing so many indications of being the production of a cultivated mind, should be connected with a knavery so impudent and a superstition so gross as that which must have characterized the founders of this pretended religious sect." It goes on to relate Matlida Davison's observations about the source of the Book of Mormon: "its claims to a divine origin are wholly unfounded." She claims that the story that came to be the Book of Mormon was written by her husband Solomon Spaulding (now usually spelled Spalding) in 1817, inspired by the burial mounds in New Salem, OH. Spaulding's manuscript was much shared among friends but never published, though it was studied by a printer's associate named Sidney Rigdon. When the Book of Mormon was published, friends of Spaulding recognized it immediately as a plagiarism of his own 'Manuscript.' Sidney Rigdon, the printer's associate mentioned in the article went on to become a leader in the LDS movement -- thereby cutting his ties with Campbell (and the Campbellites) and his movement. As such, this features the first three chapters of "Martin Chuzzlewit" by Charles Dickens, as well as an editorial criticizing the recent work and wealth of Dickens. Of note is a brief article on Mormons and Mormonism asserting that there are people in Kendal [England] taken by the dogmas of Mormonism that they refuse medical advice, and claiming that Joseph Smith is threatening to take the US by fire and sword, mentioning he had been indicted for murder and arson. Thirty-three items (18 unique titles) printed by the Mormonism Research Ministry from the library of its late director, David Costantino. The Mormonism Research Ministry (MRM) was founded in 1979 by William (Bill) and Judy McKeever. Bill's books, lectures, debates, and outreach efforts helped shape the modern evangelical engagement with Mormonism. Through publications, radio programs, conferences, and extensive documentation of LDS teachings and history, MRM has served as a major resource for researchers, clergy, and lay readers interested in the relationship between Mormonism and mainstream Christianity. Three manuscript poll books recording votes cast in Jacksonville, Illinois, in the August 1842 state election, preserving a detailed, name-by-name account of voting in a major Whig stronghold in antebellum Illinois. The books list individual voters alongside their choices for governor, lieutenant governor, sheriff, county commissioner, coroner, representatives, and a proposed constitutional amendment. Each concludes with signed certifications by election judges and clerks tallying the results. Jacksonville in this period was one of the intellectual and political centers of Illinois, home to Illinois College (founded in 1829), the first college in the state and a hub of New England-influenced reform culture. The town was closely associated with the so-called "Yale Band" of missionaries and educators, whose influence helped shape its strong Whig, evangelical, and antislavery-leaning character in the decades before the Civil War. As records of open voting prior to the adoption of the secret ballot, the volumes offer an unusually granular view of political participation, documenting not only outcomes but the alignment of individual voters within a defined community, and provide a fantastic resource for genealogical and historical data on the Jacksonville area. The inclusion of a full slate of offices reflects the structure of mid-19th century elections, in which local, county, and state contests were conducted simultaneously and recorded in a single return. The results are particularly notable for the sharp contrast between local and statewide outcomes. Thomas Ford, the Democratic candidate who ultimately won the governorship over Joseph Duncan by a comfortable statewide margin, fared poorly in Jacksonville. Across the three poll books, Ford receives just 202 votes to Duncan's 571, with Morgan County overall favoring Duncan. The disparity reflects the strong Whig orientation of Jacksonville-home to Illinois College and a center of reformist and evangelical culture-and illustrates the regional fragmentation of Illinois politics in the years preceding the Civil War. Ford's election would soon carry broader historical consequences. His administration coincided with rising tensions surrounding the Latter-day Saints at Nauvoo, where Joseph Smith had established a rapidly growing and politically influential community. Conflicts between Mormon settlers and their opponents culminated in Smith's arrest and murder in 1844. Overall, a scarce and informative set of primary documents offering a detailed snapshot of antebellum voting practices, local political identity, and the mechanics of democratic participation in early Illinois, as well as demographic information on the reform-minded Jacksonville area. A scarce survival, we find only a single poll book from Illinois in auction records. Folded and delicate with damage at folds; staining including water stains, though entirely legible. Overall good. Three packets, each 13 pp and measuring appx. 12 x 16 inches.…

Etat : Very Good +. First edition, second printing. The first and only issue of an anti-Mormon publication circulating "obscene" sermons supposedly preached by Mormon leaders including Brigham Young (though Flake-Draper notes that they are "doubtfully authentic"). 150 x 220 mm. [4] pp., complete. Two sheets of paper, somewhat browned and brittle, with a few chips to margins. A Very Good, unblemished copy of a scarce and fragile item. The publication begins, "It is a fact with which all residents of Utah are familiar that until a few years since many of the sermons of Brigham Young, as delivered in the Tabernacle in this city, were so full of profanity, and abounded with so many obscene and indecent expressions, as to be utterly unfit for publication." The supposed Brigham Young sermon is, in fact, full of profanity, as well as hatred towards non-Mormons: "Who cares about these infernal Gentiles?" he supposedly preached. "If they were to wear a s--t pot on their heads, must I do so?" The other sermons, credited to Jeter Clinton (1813 - 1892), "Bishop Wooley," and "the Bishop of San Pete," are nearly as offensive; the sermon in "San Pete" was, to add insult to injury, delivered "before six or seven hundred men, women and children." This dubious publication was clearly produced to stoke fears about Mormon impropriety and aggression towards non-Mormons. The traditional practice of polygamy was still widespread among Mormons in the 1870s, and many non-Mormons believed that the practice was both sexually deviant and at odds with mainstream Christian values. This publication predates the Edmunds-Tucker Act (sometimes referred to as the Anti-Plural Marriage Act), which restricted polygamy and seize some church properties, by about a decade, and exemplifies the brewing anti-Mormon sentiment of the period. The title "Mormon Expositor" is almost certainly a reference to the Nauvoo Expositor, the newspaper that led to the arrest and lynching of Joseph Smith, the mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois and the founder of the Mormon Church. The only issue of the Nauvoo Expositor, published by anti-polygamist ex-Mormons in June 1844, exposed Smith's practice of polygamy and accused him of teaching that church members could become gods. Enraged, Smith ordered the destruction of the press and declared martial law in Nauvoo, mobilizing the city militia. Smith was eventually charged with treason by the Governor of Illinois for declaring martial law; Smith fled and was later jailed, though a lynch mob killed both Smith and his brother, Hyrum, before they could be tried. The ambitions of the Mormon Expositor are both clear and lofty: to unearth scandalous information, whether true or false, that would lead to the overthrow of Brigham Young and other Mormon leaders. Note that this is the second of two printings produced in 1875, printed from the same type except for the title (see Flake-Draper, 5523). All printings are scarce. Flake-Draper calls a publication under the title "To the clergy of the Presbyterian Church" the "probable" first printing (Flake-Draper, 9677), which is rare, with only two recorded copies (both at BYU). The first printing is credited to Josiah Welch, whose name was removed for the second printing. We could not locate any information about Welch, which may have been a pseudonym; if Josiah Welch were the author's real name, however, removing it may have been out of concern for his safety, given the new, inflammatory title and the implication of sparking violence against Mormons. Second edition, following the 1849 Kanesville (i.e. Council Bluffs), Iowa edition. Octavo. Sewn self-wrappers; 12pp; untrimmed. Unopened. Foxing and light dust-soiling, primarily to first and final pages; Very Good. The founding document of the Territory of Deseret (i.e., Utah), supposedly drafted over several sessions of the Deseret settlement legislature in 1849. For evidence that these sessions never in fact took place, but were in fact drafted in closed sessions of the Council of Fifty, see Crawley, "The Constitution of the State of Deseret" in Brigham Young University Studies 29, no.4: ".Why the fictions of the March constitutional convention and the July session of the legislature? The obvious answer is that Congress would not have considered an application [for statehood] that had not been produced by a constituent convention and ratified by popular election." This Washington printing was preceded by the very scarce Kanesville [now Council Bluffs], Iowa edition of a year earlier. Per Streeter: "As no press was yet established in Utah this document was sent east to be printed at Kanesville." The Washington printing, a year later, though far more common is still quite infrequent in commerce; this a clean, unopened copy. FLAKE 2784. STREETER 2287. GRAFF 1061.…

Washington: U.S. House of Representatives, 50th Congress, 1st Session, 1888. 8vo (9 in. x 5¾ inches). 14 pages. Disbound. Clean and sound, with the usual heavy toning from the paper of the period. Fifth Appeal for Utah Statehood by Constitutional Convention, 1888 Quite scarce. In this impassioned 14-page petition, Utah's territorial delegates submit a newly ratified constitution to Congress, renewing their request for statehood. The memorial outlines the adoption process, including a popular vote on August 1, 1887, and addresses prevailing federal objectionsmost notably polygamy. Delegates stress their lawful conduct and frame the document as a good-faith response to national concerns. Voter disenfranchisement statutes and the impact of federal laws like the Edmunds Act are discussed in detail. Apparently not in Flake. Titled as issued: Memorial of the Constitutional Convention of Utah. January 12, 1888.Referred to the Committee on Territories and ordered to be printed.…
