Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. A Shipwreck Was Only the Beginning In 1629, the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia struck a reef off the coast of Western Australia. Hundreds survived the wreck. What followed was far more dangerous: a struggle for control, organized murder, armed resistance, rescue, trial, and execution on a remote chain of islands. The True Story Behind the Batavia Disaster The Island of Mutineers reconstructs the Batavia shipwreck and its aftermath as serious narrative history. It follows commander Francisco Pelsaert, undermerchant Jeronimus Cornelisz, soldier Wiebbe Hayes, Lucretia Jans, Gijsbert Bastiaensz, and the other survivors through the voyage, wreck, killings, resistance, rescue, and judicial reckoning. The book also asks a harder question: how much of the familiar Batavia story can be proved? Pelsaert witnessed the wreck and rescue, but he was absent during much of the violence. Many later accounts depend on testimony, confessions, Company records, and printed retellings created after the event. What Makes This Book Different Rather than repeating the most dramatic version of the story, this book compares the written record with archaeological evidence from Morning Reef, Beacon Island, West Wallabi Island, and Long Island. Graves, human remains, shipwreck material, defensive structures, weapons, and probable execution evidence are used to test where documents agree with the ground, where they remain uncertain, and where later interpretations need correction. The result is a readable account of maritime history, shipwreck survival, Dutch East India Company life, mutiny, mass murder, resistance, colonial justice, and historical archaeology, without turning uncertainty into fact. This Book Is for Readers Who. This book is for readers who enjoy carefully researched narrative history; maritime disasters and shipwreck survival stories; early Australian and Dutch East India Company history; historical true crime told without sensationalism; and archaeology that can confirm, complicate, or challenge written accounts. A History That Can Still Be Tested The Batavia disaster has been retold for nearly four centuries, but the islands and wreck site still hold evidence. If you want a historical account that combines narrative momentum with source criticism and archaeology, The Island of Mutineers offers a clear, evidence-led reconstruction of what happened and what can still be known.
