[List of Fees Owed by Catherine Thomson for Legal Services]. [New York, May 4, 1801, With postscript dated September 17, 1807]. 9" x 7" (23 x 18 cm) sheet, docketed on verso. Moderate toning and foxing, two horizontal fold lines. A well-preserved item. $500. * This document, which illuminates the legal role of upper-class women in eighteenth and early nineteenth-century New York, links members of three distinguished families with colonial roots: Catherine Walton Thomson, her daughter, Mary "Polly" Thomson Ricketts and Peter Jay Munro. It concerns fees paid by Ms. Thompson to settle accounts of her late husband. The postscript shows that Ms. Ricketts settled the bill as the executrix of her mother's estate. The nephew of John Jay, Munro was a prominent American lawyer and Federalist politician from New York. He served his uncle as a personal secretary during diplomatic missions to Spain and France. After studying law under Aaron Burr, Munro established a successful legal partnership with his cousin, Peter Augustus Jay, in New York City. Later, he represented Westchester in the New York State Assembly (1814-1815) and was a delegate to the state's Constitutional Convention in 1821. Around 1797, he built the historic "Manor House" in present-day Larchmont, New York. His Scottish gardener is credited with planting the larch trees that eventually gave the town its name. Catherine Walton [1729-1807] was a prominent figure in colonial New York society. Born into a wealthy merchant family, she was married to a prominent Episcopalian minister, Rev. James Thompson. George and Martha Washington were among the many important people they entertained in their home. One of her daughters, Ann Thomson Gerry, was married to Elbridge Gerry, the 5th Vice President of the United States. Mary "Polly" Thomson Ricketts [1760-1812] was married to Jacob Ricketts [b. 1761], a merchant from a wealthy, socially prominent New York merchant family that owned a plantation in Jamaica. Several members of the Ricketts family held political offices and military commissions in Jamaica.
