Kennedy's 1980 challenge to incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination, this is very much a book of its political moment rather than a retrospective biography. Levin and Repak examine the Kennedy mystique, his 1962 campaign, seventeen years in the Senate, health insurance, judicial reform, foreign policy and defense, the decline of the Camelot aura, and the 1980 election, concluding with the provocative question of whether a Kennedy presidency would actually make a difference. A contemporary Christian Science Monitor review described the book as concentrating particularly on Kennedy's legislative record and policy positions, while noting the authors' argument that the presumed 'charisma factor' had evaporated during the difficult 1980 campaign. The book was released May 27, 1980, making it a genuine campaign-season document published before the Democratic National Convention. First Edition, First Printing. T. A. Repak is an investigative reporter who had worked for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson.
