Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Near Fine. First Thus. The sub-title of this work is `Goldweights of the Akan'. Goldweights are miniature brass standards to be balanced (on a pan balance) by gold dust in a commercial transaction. They seem to have come into use in the Gold Coast region of West Africa about 1400. This work is a catalogue of t…he varieties and types of weights in the Glenbow collection. The weights come in many, many shapes but 4 types are common: Geometric, Animals, Human Figurals and Tools. The weights are grouped into a measurement system(s) that evolved with time, outside cultural influence, etc. They also have symbolic meanings. Cond : Paper wrapper (back) is bright yellow (as are end papers). Corners and edges are CRISP. No marks, tears, creases nor names. BRIGHT, tight and clean. Cover has colour photo of weights, pans, spoon and box. Lots of b/w photos (actual size) of weights, also weight system tables, 3 maps and casting (cire perdue) notes.69 pages. Two people in a business transaction might each have a set of weights, so bargaining began as to which set was valid. Over-heavy weights could have pieces broken off or be drilled out. Uniformity was not a GIVEN. Size: 4to. John Dean (photography) (illustrateur).
