Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book confronts the injurious presence of intemperance in antebellum America, exploring the destructive grip it held over countless lives and communities. The author, writing with fervent passion, argues that the problem extended far beyond the obvious drunkards. It permeated all levels of society, with even the temperate contributing to its perpetuation through their own practices and beliefs. The author dissects societyâs false views on the usefulness of alcohol, revealing how its widespread medicinal use laid the foundation for rampant abuse. They further examine how social customs and beliefs fostered an environment where excessive drinking was not only tolerated but encouraged. The author underscores the moral imperative of confronting this scourge and the need for collective action to dismantle the web of corrupting influences that sustained it. This book serves as a powerful indictment of a society that allowed such devastation to fester and provides valuable insights into the complex roots of addiction, offering a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing its destructive spread.
