In so doing we have endeavoured to bring into a single whole evidence derived from a great variety of sources. The excavations of 1925-28 have supplied the basis of our conclusions for the prehistoric and mediaaval periods, but they have been supplemented wherever possible by the use of primary and secondary written authorities, and in the last section on the post- Reformation period, which will, we hope, appeal especially to \Y/ykehamist readers, we have been able to draw on that store of tradition which is part of the rich heritage of \Y/inchester College. We have endeavoured, that is to say, to do something more than write an Excavation Report.
