Etat : Very Good. xii, 306, 8 col plates, text figs. . HB. Vg in d/w. Name and ownership stamp to endpaper. After three decades of investigation, and after traveling hundreds of thousands of miles across the globe-from Melbourne to Moscow, Boston to Beijing - Gingerich has written a book built on his experience and the remarkable insights gleaned from examining some 600 copies of De Revolutionibus. He found the books owned and annotated by Galileo, Kepler and many other lesser-known astronomers whom he brings back to life, which illuminate the long, reluctant process of accepting the Sun-centred cosmos and highlight the historic tensions between science and the Catholic Church. He traced the ownership of individual copies through the hands of saints, heretics, scalawags, and bibliomaniacs. He was called as the expert witness in the theft of one copy, witnessed the dramatic auction of another, and proves conclusively that De Revolutionibus was as inspirational as it was revolutionary. Part biography of a book, part scientific exploration, part bibliographic detective story, The Book Nobody Read recolours the history of cosmology and offers new appreciation of the enduring power of an extraordinary book and its ideas. Illustrated printed wrappers, 8vo, 401-416 pp, 12 plates. 44 items. Catalogue of an exhibition. From the introduction: "By using such themes as Copernicus' library, his printer Petreius, the 1543 "annus mirabilis" in publishing, and the early dissemination of the Copernican cosmology, it was possible to build an informative and visually exciting exhibition limited to books of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and restricted to an overlap of only 20% with the 1970 show." Printed wrappers, 4to, 26 cm, 45, [2] pp, ills. 57 entries. From the introduction by Owen Gingerich: "Harrison Horblit began searching out rare works in the history of science long before it was fashionable to collect earlv science, and without a guide such as his own Grolier Club volume, One Hundred Books Famous in Science. More recently he became intrigued with the pioneering days of photography, and he began to acquire the photographically illustrated books of Fox Talbot long before earlv photographv became fashionable. An admirer of the great nineteenth-century manuscript collector Sir Thomas Phillipps. Horblit gathered together some selected manuscripts and a great deal of memorabilia from Philiipps' remarkable library. .A significant number of Horblit's choicest items now reside in Houghton Library. .This catalogue and exhibition show only a fraction of the treasures that Harrison Horblit has shared with Harvard. His gifts to Houghton Librarv include forty-one incunabula, volumes from the first half centurv of printing: sixteen of them are shown here. Of the manuscripts, ranging from what is apparently the earliest papal bull in America (early twelfth centurv) to a letter from Sigmund Freud on King Lear, only two are in the catalogue. Of a large number of 'STC' items - English printing before 1641-eleven are included. On the exhibition labels and in the catalogue that follows, I have tried to indicate the significance of each item either as a text or .is an object, or both." Cloth, 8vo, 21 cm, xii, 306 pp, ills (some colour). "Part detective story, part travel-book, part chronicle of an obsession, The Book Nobody Read tells the story of Owen Gingerich's quest to visit ever surviving copy of one of the world's great books.1543 saw the publication of one of the most significant scientific works ever written: De revolutionibus (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), in which Nicolaus Copernicus presented a radically different structure of the cosmos by placing the sun, and not the earth, at the centre of the universe. But did anyone take notice? Owen Gingerich was intrigued by Arthur Koestler's claim that sixteenth-century Europe paid little attention to the groundbreaking, but dense, masterpiece. Gingerich embarked on a thirty-year odyssey to examine every extant copy to prove Koestler wrong.Logging thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of miles Gingerich uncovered a treasure trove of material on the life of a book and the evolution of an idea. His quest led him to copies once owned by saints, heretics, and scallywags, by musicians and movie stars; some easily accessible, others almost lost to time, politics and the black market. Part biography of a book and a man, part bibliographic and biblophilic quest, Gingerich's The Book Nobody Read is an utterly captivating piece of writing, a testament to the power both of books and of the love of books."- from the blurb.
