Cloth, with dust jacket. 135 pages. Text in English. As new, with minimal signs of use. In 1880 the heirs of Rabbi Leser Rosenthal (1794-1868) donated his collection of books on Judaism to the city of Amsterdam. Housed in the Amsterdam University Library, the collection grew into one of the largest Jewish book collections in the world. This book presents a number of highlights from the collection in words and images: not only Hebrew prayer books and Yiddish editions of the Old Testament, but also marriage contracts, writing samples by a Jewish calligrapher, pamphlets, literary texts, prints and even a simple newspaper cutting, spanning the period from 1290 to the twentieth century. The selection is not random but evokes an image of Jewish life and culture through the centuries. The approximately 60 items are discussed by as many experts and illustrated with colour photographs of excellent quality. Besides book lovers, this book will also appeal to those interested in Jewish culture and history. 777g.…
