As-is, with front board detached, along with title page and table of contents. Losses to binding on spine. Some instances of wear within text block, including staining remnants. Ex-library from the Eastport Public Library, with 1874 or 1894 accession date listed on bookmark on front board. Inscribed "From Rev. N. Worcester to the Eastport Library" on first page of general text. Additional ex-library markings and label throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. VOLUME I ONLY. A scarce work by American Unitarian clergyman and early pacifism proponent Noah Worcester (1758-1837). It is unknown if the gift inscription is of Worcester or one of his descendants. A wonderful piece for restoration and rebinding.

Noah Worcester (1758-1837) was a Unitarian clergyman and important figure in the history of American pacifism. He wrote under the pseudonym of Philo Pacificus. Full leather covers are rubbed and a little worn. Black leather spine label is a little chipped, though lettering remains good. Contents show signs of age, though remain generally clean and intact. Volume remains tight and solid. A nice copy.

The author of this work, Noah Worcester (1758-1837), was a "Unitarian clergyman and a seminal figure in history of American pacifism. Although active in Unitarian theological controversies of the day, Worcester is best remembered as a pioneer in the American peace movement. In December 1814, he published A Solemn Review of the Custom of War (under the pen-name Philo Pacificus), still considered one of the best pieces of anti-war literature ever committed to print, and as relevant today as then." (From Wikipedia) This book contains the first seven issues of "The Friend of Peace" intended to direct the public to a more attentive consideration of the subject of war. It is prefixed with an analytic work on the custom of war, its causes and consequences, and the possible remedy. Ex-library copy with bookplate on inside of front cover, reference sticker at rear, stamp at lower margin of the Index's first page, and at upper margin of the title page for "A Solemn Review of the Custom of War." Very minor and sporadic age-toning and foxing throughout. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Untrimmed pages. Inscribed by Noah Worcester to John Comly, and dated 1818 on the first page. St. John's, Newfoundland had two fires in 1817 which were jointly named as the Great Fire of 1817. This pamphlet outlines some of the aid sent from Boston. St. John's was to experience more fires in 1819, and later in the century, in 1849 and 1892. The inscribee, John Comly (1773-1850), was a Quaker minister and school master. He married a fellow teacher at the Westtown School, Rebecca Budd, and together they ran the Pleasant Hill School on their Byberry Farm from 1804-1815. Canada, Pacifism 110504A.

In-8° broché en état de parution, relié par une cordelette, 47 pp - - - Noah Worcester (né le 25 novembre 1758 à Hollis, dans le New Hampshire - mort le 31 octobre 1837 à Brighton, dans le Massachusetts) était un pasteur américain unitarien engagé dans le mouvement pacifiste. À l'âge de seize ans, Noah Worcester rejoint les milices de Hollis. Il participe ainsi à la Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis et, plus particulièrement aux batailles de Bunker Hill en 1775 et de Bennington en 1778 Quelques années plus tard, en 1785, il décide de devenir pasteur et est devient ministre à Thornton, dans le New Hampshire, deux ans plus tard. Il y reste pendant 23 ans, contribuant également régulièrement à des journaux tant populaires que théologiques. En 1810, il devient pasteur à Salisbury, dans le New Hampshire, pour aider son frère malade2. Trois ans plus tard, en mai 1813, il devient rédacteur en chef du mensuel The Christian Disciple à Boston1 et déménage à Brighton, dans le Massachusetts. En décembre 1814, il publie A Solemn Review of the Custom of War, un traité pacifiste qui sera traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Il fonde également la Massachusetts Peace Society et, en 1815, crée un journal intitulé The Friend of Peace dont il sera le rédacteur en chef jusqu'en 1828. Ce journal aurait été l'une des publications religieuses les plus influentes de son temps.
