RARE 16th-century edition of the "Thesaurus Linguae Sanctae", a Hebrew-Latin dictionary for Catholic ministers, originally composed during the early 16th century by the Dominican Bible scholar St.Pagnini. The dictionary appended a list of nominalization patterns and a list of irregular nouns. This edition was printed by the famous Dutch publisher Christopher Plantin at 1570, during the first years of the religious strife that came to be known as the Eighty Years` War. The book features the publisher`s elaborate emblem on the title page, a decorative first capital letter on the first text page, and floral title bars in several places throughout the book. The book ends with a royal privilege from Emperor Maximilian II. 115x165mm. Unpaginated preface and appendix. 380 pages (irregular pagination: [188] + [193-380], but the text is COMPLETE. Rebound in black cloth Hardcover. Gilt lettering on spine. Ex libris and binder`s stickers on endpaper. Pen inscriptions (dated 1752) on title page, and outside the text on few other pages. The book is unbound and needs sewing and binding. Pagninus was born in Lucca about 1470 and died in Lyons in 1541. In 1486 he joined the Dominican Order and entered the reformed Convent at Fiesoli, where one of his teachers was Savonarola."Formidable Thesaurus lingua sancta which reveals a remarkable mastery of the rabbinical language and literature" (Max Engammare). Paganini studied Greek, Hebrew and Oriental languages at the convent of San Marco in Florence, then under the influence of Savonarola, and then taught in Rome. On the death of Pope Leo X, he settled in Avignon and then in Lyon in 1526. Paganini is the author of an important translation of the Bible. He contributed, with the Prior of Montrottier Jean de Vauzelles, to the foundation of the Hospital of Charity and General Alms of Lyon in 1534.…

Modern halfleather, new endpapers. In 1583 Christopher Plantin settled in Leiden as printer of the university. He was succeeded in 1585 by his son in law, Fr. Raphalengius, who was appointed professor of Hebrew in 1586. In 1588 he published the first Leiden edition of the small Hebrew and Chaldaic dictionary of Pagnino, followed by a second ed. in 1599, and the third in 1609. In these 3 editions Raphalengius added a preface and in the third one he added the Latin index. Another edition was published in 1616. Fuks, Leiden 24. Steinschn.
