Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo, ix, 214 pages. In Very Good minus condition. Contained in the original white box, with tears along the white paper and corners. Wrapped in the original onionskin wrap, with closed tears along the head/tail edges. Fully bound in the publisher's brown cloth, with gilt ornamentation to spine edges,… blind tooling and gilt lettering to front board. Boards have bumps along the front and rear surfaces, light stains along the head edges, and mild wear along the extremities. Textblock has very minor soiling on some pages throughout, and light foxing and adhesive stains along the end papers. Gilt edges. Shelved in Room A. "The Story of Yaddo" was published in 1923, after the death of Katrina Trask, one of the founders of "Yaddo", an artist community and retreat center in New York state. It includes a forward by Katrina written in the winter of 1917-1918, explaining that she has "left a bequest that The Story Of Yaddo should be privately printed and kept on record for those who are to come to Yaddo in the future." Yaddo is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. The estate was purchased in 1881 by Katrina's husband Spencer Trask, and converted into an artist retreat by Spencer and Katrina in 1900. Yaddo remains one of the leading retreats for visual artists, writers, musicians and dancers. It has housed a multitude of famous creatives since its inception, including James Baldwin, Sylvia Plath, Hannah Arendt, Beauford Delaney, Louise Belcourt and many more. 1396791. Special Collections.
