L'aquarelle originale réservée à ceux-ci est en revanche absente. Suivent 500 exemplaires sur vélin pour un tirage total de 520 exemplaires numérotés. L'ouvrage est illustré par Pierre Paschal de 48 compositions au trait coloriées au pochoir. Clément Janin, dans Les nouvelles littéraires, artistiques et scientifiques, du 19 mai 1928 (n° 292), loue la beauté de la couverture illustrée « sigillée d'un grand trèfle noir et or d'un puissant effet » (p. 4). Ce recueil de 3 contes, curieusement peuplé de personnages dont le nom commence par la syllabe « Her », parut pour la première fois au Mercure de France en 1895. « Par le biais de l'imaginaire symboliste, Régnier aborde la question de l'aristocratie qui lui deviendra un véritable mythe personnel et qui le travaillera tout au long de son oeuvre narrative.
