[From front jacket flap] The British Army is famed throughout the world for its individual regiments, most of which have existed in unbroken descent for between 200 and 300 years. Despite the sentiments of those who would detract from their successes, the history of the regiments is a brilliant one. They have fought and served in more parts of the globe than those of any other army in the history of mankind. Conspicuous among them are the Scottish regiments, twelve in all, comprising one cavalry, one guards and ten infantry of the line. Scotland's soldiers have a reputation for fighting which is hard to rival. Their distinctive uniforms are no mere bravado; the strength of national character is witnessed by their deeds in combat. The campaigns in which they have fought are part of British Military history - glorious victories, long drawn-out campaigns; fearsome enemies and terrible ordeals of climate and terrain. The Scottish regiments have magnificently proved their worth time and time again. Every one of the regiments recorded in this book has a unique history. Raised at different times under different circumstances, each has formed its own particular reputation. To this day each maintains its own distinctive style and ethos, and faces tasks in the late-twentieth century of which its founders could never have dreamed.
