Edition originale et premier tirage des belles planches d'uniformes par Pauquet, coloriées à la main. Exemplaire de Eugène Aubry, pharmacien à Connerré dans la Sarthe et grand collectionneur d'uniformes et objets militaires (tampon et étiquette ex-libris répétée) enrichi par celui-ci de : 1) un certificat autographe signé et daté du 8 décembre 1870 d'un adjoint au maire du XVIIe arrondissement de Paris indiquant que le citoyen Victor Louvet (probablement l'architecte Louis-Victor Louvet, premier grand prix de Rome) a effectué son service de garde national en tenant une fonction municipale, 2) un petit dessin d'uniforme aux crayons de couleur et à la mine de plomb, 3) la carte de visite de Chartier, sous-lieutenant porte-aigle du 46e bataillon de la Garde nationale, 4) la facture de la librairie R. Rieffel où E. Aubry a acheté l'exemplaire en mai 1913, 5) la fiche de l'exemplaire (alors broché) dans le catalogue Rieffel ainsi qu'une autre fiche de libraire sur cette édition. Boards edge rubbed, and slightly bumped, pages slightly cockled, tissue guards not present, very attractive handwritten dedication dated 1876 on half title, contents very g…ood thus. The second of two works issued by the Pauquets with a selection of 96 of their coloured plates; the other was wholly for French examples, while this covers the rest of the world, with examples from Europe, Africa and Asia. The binding is not original, but is very attractive; the absence of the tissue guards suggested a full and later rebinding. The dedication is to Maria d'Aguilar (Blackhall??) of Edinburgh from her unnamed husband; the unusual middle name might indicate a link to the early English rugby international Francis d'Aguilar, whose grandmother was called Maria, and whose uncle the explorer and author Richard Burton also had a sister of the same name.

Les titres gravés rendent hommage à Michel Ange, Jean Cousin, Tortebat, Houdon et Salvage. Les figures de l'homme en pied de la première partie sont gravées d'après Albinus. Chaque planche, ainsi que le titre de la 3e partie, sont présentées en deux "états" : en regard de la gravure se trouve la copie, inversée grâce une puissante décharge d'encre, par un effet volontaire. Hippolyte Pauquet "occupa une place honorable parmi les dessinateurs dits romantiques". Il travailla en collaboration avec son frère cadet Polydor (Bénézit). Titre de la première partie réparé. Mouillure intérieure marginale.

They were the sons of Jean Louis Charles Pauquet (1759-1837), artist and engraver, and Marie-Madeleine Lacroix (1771-1841). [1][2] Hippolyte-Louis-Émile Pauquet (28 February 1797 Paris - 20 March 1871) was the elder of the two and was largely responsible for engravings based on the illustrations by Polydore Jean-Charles Pauquet (30 July 1800 Paris - 20 April 1879), [3] though the two shared credit for their works. They first served as apprentices to their father, Jean Louis Charles Pauquet, and on 18 August 1812 enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
