In original blind-stamped brown cloth which originally bore a matched pair of vertical color paste-on images (`1-5/8 X 3-3/4 inches), the left showing the masked "girl," the right depicting "the robber" (bearing a revolver and a green "bull's-eye" railroad lantern) -- both these images being duplicated as plates within, "the girl" being used as the frontispiece. Unfortunately, the top inch of the "robber' paste-on has been torn away from the front board, reducing our grade here from "very good" to "good." Both internal plates -- to include the tissue-protected frontispiece -- remain in place and firmly attached. Futrelle -- who went down with the Titanic -- is remembered primarily as the creator of his detective "The Thinking Machine," who debuts here. Mystery. 224 pp. Reduced from $190.
